Why do you hang out on the religion and spirituality board if you're convinced there's no God? Could it be that you're questioning your choice, and hoping someone will prove you wrong? Just asking out of curiosity, not to start a fight.

Some people just like to argue and debate for the sport of it. They like the intellectual and conversational stimulation that comes from taking part in a spirited--or even heated--debate. I think that is the case with a lot of the atheists that hang out in this section. I do think that some are just here to pick fights, though, even though they do seem to be a minority.

Besides, if you want to spit hairs, atheism can be considered a part of religion and spirituality. In short, their religion and spirituality is that they have no religion or spirituality

We hang out here to answer questions like yours. Why address us in the first place?

I'm sure there are plenty of people here who are either on the fence of believing or just wish for points of view of non-believers. We have every right to hang out here and voice our opinions against the idea of religion. I don't see an ONLY in the title of this group.

Is there a misconception by religious people that we, as atheists, are secretly hoping to find god? I don't know about the other atheists here but I'm sure not looking. There's nothing in this world that could make be believe in god.

If you think religion (Christianity to be more specific) doesn't affect those of us who don't believe, think again. With the Bush administration being fundie-friendly and some state govt's actually having laws in their books against non-Christians (and atheists in particular), we have to stand up against fundies and right-wing BS taking away our freedoms and liberties.

I am an atheist, but I know a lot about religion and I enjoy discussing it. If (for example) all you could hear about Islam, is from christians, muslims, and jews. There would by no unbiased opinions.

I feel that I have a lot to give the religion and spirituality section even though I am an atheist, just as I have a lot to give the history section, even though I was born in the 20th century.

I'm an atheist and I come on here to try figure out what could possess people to believe in something so illogical. I have no problem with religion when people actually use it for good. If it helps them be a better person, and they help others and are kind, then more power to 'em. But when people start trying to force their beliefs into my government, my schools, they start wars over it, and discriminate against people who don't believe, I have a problem, and I want to do what I can to keep my freedom to not believe intact. You should go on youtube and search for "Why I care about religion" theres a good video by "Imrational" that answers your question quite well.

We are trying to educate the brainwashed masses that give money to enhance the lifestyle of its religious leaders ,but deny themselves a better life .
Why don`t the followers question where ALL the money goes .
What exactly are miscellaneous funds .
Why do Televangelists have MEGA churches and Jets and Mansions ??????
Why when they Spread the word ,using your donations do they need to CHARGE for something that is free .?
I'm sure the bible they`re reading out of doesn`t cost $30 a sentence ?
We Mainly want to know How to MEET this living God .We`re not into pretending .
All we ask is WHERE TO FIND HIM ,so we can believe .
PLEASE DON~T QUOTE THE BIBLE.it is FICTION.

Why don't theists stop proselytizing if their "god" is so powerful? It can allegedly "create the universe" but it can't provide convincing evidence of its existence? Puh-leeze....

Theists traipse around spewing religion and claim to be oppressed when told it's unwelcome, yet when theists attempt to enact laws that adhere to a specific religion, it's not oppression? Get a grip.

No wonder people like you are called _hypochristians_.

I'm not a atheist, but a agnostic. Its not I don't believe in God, I do, I just don't believe the whole bible thing... my sister is a atheist, well she claims to be and my parents ask her the same thing. I think its more of a fact issue, she wants proof that theres something greater out there, and evolution. Personally, I cannot believe I came from a monkey of any type. Good luck to you, hope you get the answer your looking for.

I always question my 'choice'. That's what made me an atheist to begin with. I reserve the right to change my position again if my knowledge changes again too. Part of being here is to help refine my positions and test them for philosophical weaknesses. I'm simply not creative enough to accomplish that on my own.

But mostly I hang out here because it's fun. I enjoy throwing rocks at other people's glass houses.

I've learned from hanging out here that believers are really fond of asking this "question", and almost invariably throw in that "could it be that you're questioning your choice?" schtick. I find that very interesting. It goes along with the claims that atheists often have "death-bed conversions". Believers seem to really need to believe that atheists are confused and tentative about their beliefs.

Why is that? Why are you so nervous about atheism that you need to believe this kind of thing? What is it that believers are so afraid of?

For a more direct answer, it's fun and encouraging to see the intelligent responses that we get from people like Duck Phup, Brenda, Captain Atheism, SpamandHam, etc. It kind of restores my faith (gasp!) in mankind.

Well not that I think that, its just the responses I have seen from xians turned around.

Its an open forum and you just asked us a question. Thats why we are here.

and how can we learn anything from you when your default answer for everything is "god did it". No thought put into any of your answers. You dont back up anything, you just say "god did it".
