The horse does all the work. Those horses are definatly the athletes. All the Jockey has to do is sit on top and beat it with a stick to make it go faster.(which if you agreed with animal cruelty I guess that's a work out)

Both. The jockey because jockeys are in the best shape of all athletes according to recent data presented in The Daily Racing Form; but without being a good athlete a horse cannot win, can it?
Insiders will tell you that a lousy horse cannot be ridden to a victory by the best jockey, but likewise a jockey with poor skills can jinx a good horse too.
So take your pick - betting only when they both have been consistently good is wise.

Well then its the training , then that trainer has to find the right person Jockey that will fit that horse some Jocks have strong points like L. Pincay hard hitter Fernando Toro A TURF Jockey etc Some hit right sided etc Then you have to find one's that will rate a horse etc , not all Jockeys can ride all horses History has proved that. Now then lets all remember the gallop people and grooms that know that horse and takes great care of him There is many way;s but nothing really is Scientific about horses and Jockeys Just good training and finding which one will fit that horse and Win with it ...

The way I see it, the jockey is the quarterback and the horse is the rest of the team. They both are athletes working together. As for the woman who made the comment about real sports, what about the poor pigs--should be free to run around in the slop rather than be skinned to make footballs? Idiot.

well my dads a jockey so i know for a fact the answer is both .The jockey has to be in as much shape as the horse .It may look easy but it takes a lot of control for the jockey to control a horse that just wants to go cause that's what there trained to do .

Well, you got the obligatory one PETA answer, but in my opinion everyone else is right. Both of them are athletes. It's a team sport. Just look at footage of the jockey's face when Barbaro got hurt... dude was in tears.
You have great horses, and you have great jockeys, but without either, the other is nothing.
Really though, I'm an athlete too. You should see me doing the full body jump at Belmont waving my ticket screaming "CLOSE CLOSE CLOSE CLOSE!"

Without a doubt, they both are. And together they are more than just the sum of the individual animal or person. Let's not forget the trainers either, or those that provide the backing for them. From the owners on to the vets, everyone works to keep both horse & jockey in excellent shape.

Definitely both. I love horse racing and those jockeys are strong, fearless and extremely driven, just like the horses they ride.
If horses don't want to run, they won't. The best race horses absolutely love it.

the horse would not be able to win with out the jockey and the jockey would not be able to win without the horse. you can never compare them. when a rider is on a horse they imideatly become a team!
