my son does always look to his stepdad for approval and likes going places, but he will scream and through tantrums if his S.D. so much as looks at him when im around. When my son doesn't know I'm around he loves his S.D. to death. please help

two possibilities or a combination of the two...
He could be having a hard time sharing your attention being used to having your time one on one...
He could be reacting to cues from you... Are YOU nervous around his stepdad??? If so, he'll pick up on that and perceive him as a threat to you and himself....

He doesn't like to share your attention .... my son did this in the beginning with my current husband but he eventually learned that I didn't fall for his little trick.

Is he jealous of sharing you with S.D or sharing him with you_ do either of you treat him differently when your all together? this stuff is important to us three year olds!!!

Maybe, if you are divorced, he's trying to show you that he doesn't enjoy your husbands company because he wants you and his real father to get back together. Just a guess.
