You got me. Most of the teachers in my area don't do their job anyway. I asked my stepson if he was asking the teacher to help him on something in math, and he said she tells them to go on to the next problem and she'll help when she has time. I can't figure out what they are doing that they can't get around to helping the kids. That's their job. It seems like they think all they have to do is go over the assignment real quick, assign the homework, and leave the kids to work on their homework. I know that their jobs can't be easy, but part of their job is to help the kids with their problems.

That is an easy questions...it is because our job doesn't end at 3:30pm when school is out...we go home and have the luxury of having to plan work for the next day, mark papers, record grades, etc. We easily work 10-12 hours a day all school year, with a work filled weekend, then in the summers we have to do our professional development which consists of long (3-5day) seminars/courses, taking university level courses, etc. Teachers don't ever really get to rest or take a day off because we get too far behind. We are underpaid in that the hours we work far exceed our compensation.

It would be interesting to annualize a teacher's salary based on hours worked and see how it measures up to other jobs requiring a college degree.

One thing I did notice was that the average GRE score to get into the top few graduate engineering schools is 775 whereas the average GRE score to get into the top few graduate education schools was 590. I have to wonder why there is almost a 200 point difference.

Because they have very long days...it doesn't end w/ the school bell. They have grading, class prep, test prep, etc.

And the 185 days/year is misleading. It sounds like half a 365 day year, when in fact, most people only work 250 days/year.

But, they aren't underpaid b/c it's supply and demand.
