I don't know about the cheapest flights. But I fly into Newark, which seems to be the most efficient airport in NYC, and stay at an airport motel. The airport motels are much cheaper and have a shuttle to the airport which has a train that goes right to Pennsylvania Station. Granted, it's not as convenient, but I hate paying the price of hotel rooms in NYC, they're outrageous, even for the cheap ones.

In the past day I've read that Delta started a price war going back some time back and that a return ticket from Heathrow or maybe Gatwick can be had for from £160.

Id try aer lingus. You fly via dublin and we got really good prices with them

Ive stayed in two hotels in New York. The Ameritania, its location is fab and we got a room overlooking broadway which was excellent. Rooms arent fantastic but definately liveable with for a weekend stay. They seem to keep putting their prices up though. The other one is Park Central, again a good location, slightly closer to central park further from times square but still a really good spot. Rooms are nicer here if you dont get the one with the huge blood stain on the carpet like we did, we got changed though and the other one was much less scary! Prices is better on this one. And it has a fantastic deli straight across the street for late night New York Cheesecake!

Hope you enjoy it!

All the major airlines will kinda match fares. I think British air would probably have the losest fares because they have the most flights.

You could pick any number of airlines. BA, american, united, virgin, continental (newark). It seems their fares are always arouind the same because they compete. I flew to London from New York once and got a 289.00 with one time.

The best fares will always be in the winter, and always need to be booked at least 2 weeks in advance.

Hotel Pennsylvania is not the most affordable hotel in Manhattan, but its rates are very reasonable and you can't beat its location (2 blocks from Penn Station, where you would arrive if you took the train from Newark or La Guardia aiport, close to 34th street Macys, Madison Square Garden, etc.).

Virgin packages are pretty good value. They sort out our flights (on Virgin Atlantic, which is very comfortable even in economy), your hotel and your transportation from the airport (either JFK or EWR - flights go to both airports from LHR and are the same price I think).

The Comfort Inn Manhattan is nice, reasonably priced and in a good location.
