Then why does religion try to scare people ( and especially children ) about 'burning in the fires of hell? if on the one hand as we are told,we are free for evermore of pain when we are a soul, then what is there to fear from burning in hell.WE WON'T FEEL IT according to that doctrine,so whats the point in scaring people into believing they will?I'd like it explained how something that has no nerves, skin, cells or anything else 'human',in the earthly sense, feels pain in ANY way.
Please no quotes from the bible.I'd like peoples OWN perceptions for a change.

Oooooh but it's the mysterious "soul" pain, dontchaknow. The kind of pain unknowable to us meatsacks but totally relevant to souls.

*shrug* I don't know, honestly. It seems like a pretty funky bunch of nonsense.

Actually, when the stories of hell and so forth were first written, it was believed that the physical body itself would be cast into hell. They literally believed that the risen dead would rise bodily up to heaven (the sky), or down into hell, (underground) on judgement day.

This is demonstrated beautifully by the fact that Jesus' physical body left the grave and floated up to heaven. (If you'll remember, the tower of Babel was built to reach heaven (the sky), as well, further proving the nonsensical origins of Christianity)

However, as is the custom, Christianity has distorted and reinterpreted these ancient myths, in an attempt to make them fit into the gaps in science. We now know that heaven isn't in the sky, and dead bodies aren't going to float up there. So, this whole interdimensional stuff was created to replace these beliefs.

No, i might opt to have faith the religious soul feels no soreness yet freedom, because of the fact all emotion is led to by making use of chemical substances in our physique, and soreness is a few thing that the techniques acknowledges.

It comes down tot he defintion of soul, which originally just meant "mind". I have heard that the "fire" is the psychological pain of seperation from God. Perhaps that's also why they believe that Atheists are miserable people, becuase they already fit the defintiiton of being in Hell.

Like all other animals, humans have no souls.

The reason hell and heaven were invented was to give reason to do good and stay away from evil. Fear is the most effective method of controlling people.

But you are right. A soul is nothing like a human body, and shouldn't feel pain the same way we do.

You are asking Atheists and do not want bible quotes? Are you a little confused? No soul, so it cannot feel pain.

Religion is a human institution....and Humans are blind to death. While our souls do not feel...one must also grasp the concept that our soul cannot think...brains think...our souls and our energy will return from 'whence' it came...back to god...free of religion...and free of thought...

I don't believe there is a soul so it doesn't scare me. If I ever see a dead man come to life I might believe , but I won't be holding my breath till them.

Er, there's no such thing as a "soul".

Is your question "why do people say this, if it makes no sense?"? The answer to that is simply that people don't think much about it - many people just accept the claim, no matter how obviously false.

Hey Brenda, are you referring to the Peter Popoff nonsense, as shown in the Randi video? I just showed that to one of my classes yesterday, and yes, everytime he does that, I can only think "He's physically abusing those old ladies, right there on camera in front of a huge crowd, and no-one does anything about it". What a bastard.

Wow what a good point. I never thought of that. Their body is buried, and the soul has no body. Yet, another example and further proof that the bible was written by men.
