either in carryon or checked luggage...has this happened to anyone, is it even possible, or is this purely urban legend?

Xrays used in the airport and by customs are very weak and pose no risk to you, film, CD's, or anything else.

While I can't vouch for rewritable CDs, the way CDs are burned is by etching grooves into a CD like an old vinyl record. CDs are not a magnetic medium like cassette tapes. They should be fine.

I can't find a snopes.com article on this, but I wouldn't worry. If you are really worried, just mail it to yourself.

No...it can;t.. burned media cannot be erased...by xrays.,.
