Chihuahuas are the number one biting dogs in America. The fact that they are so little makes it not as well known. If a chihuahua was the size of pit then everyone would want to get rid of chihuahuas. Having said that, I had a chihuahua, Belle, that got along great with my niece, that was two, but Belle could only handle being around her for a short period of time and then she would beg to go home. I have heard of people stepping on them and crushing them and they do not make good puppies for small children to hold and carry around, they tend to bite near the child's eye. Sorry, but I wouldn't do it.

The answer could be yes, but it could be no. The dog must be very well-socialized to children, the child must have an understanding of what is an is not acceptable behavior with a dog, and they must must MUST be supervised at all times when together. People often make the mistake with small dogs of thinking that it isn't necessary to train them because they can't do much damage. But with a toddler, a chihuahua can do plenty of damage and must be very well trained.
Because chihuahuas are so small, there's the extra caution of them being easily injured by toddlers who don't know their own strength. Small dogs can get snappy if cornered and threatened.

All dogs are fine with all well bahaved children if socialized properly. Although I would take great caution and thought before putting the two together. More for the puppies sake than for the child. As we all know 2 year olds are top heavy and clumsy. A 2 year old trips falls and lands on the puppy. The result is a paralized or dead puppy. I would wait until the child is older before getting such a small dog of any breed.

Although it could depend on the personality of the dog in question, in general they recommend that families with small children don't have small toy breeds of dogs. This is because kids usually don't learn to respect animals until they are older - 8 and up. Kids don't know their own strength, nor do they know what is cruel or mean (especially not a two year old, who is still learning)
A two year old will poke at a dog's eyes, pull on it, etc. A kid that age doesn't realise the dog is alive with feelings, etc. A dog will defend itself. Unless you are lucky enough to get an extremely tolerant dog. But it's usually the larger breeds, like labrador retrievers, that have that kind of kid-friendly personality.

Generally speaking the really small dogs do not do well with really young children because the kids often make the dogs nervous and they can get snappy. However, all dogs are individuals and if you had a calm chihuahua along with a child who's taught how to treat a dog, it could work. Not something I'd do though.

I do not know from personal experience but I have heard that they do not. Sorry but Chihuahuas are some what snippy little dogs and there is a good chance that they could bite a child who gets too rough.

Every chihuahua I have ever seen doesnt really do well with small children. They seem to be very nervous dogs. Especially around noise and fast movements which children are good at!

I'd say yes and no. If you get a puppy and raise it with the 2 year old then yes it will get used to it but you also have to teach your 2 year old to be gentle with the puppy. I wouldn't recommend going out and buying an adult dog though unless you specifically know that it's used to kids.

If you get them as puppies then yes they can be it's all in the age that you get them. I got my parents two toy chihuahuas as puppies and they love and lick all over my niece and nephew when they come over and they are young. It's the older ones that could be a problem because you are not sure as to how they were trained and who they were brought up with.
