Alaska became a Russian colony in 1744, and was settled in 1784. The formation of Canada as a country made the American forefathers very nervous, as they didn't want a monarchist country dominating the North.
In 1867, America paid Russia just over $7 million dollars to buy Alaska, or Russian America as it was sometimes known. It was unpopular move with most of America, but was meant to allow American troops a foothold if they ever had problems with Canada.

No.
You may have heard a few years back of some people in Alaska wanted to make a PART Alaska a part of Canada. These people wanted to avoid federal taxes and governmental control. Nothing ever came of it.
