Well it's not so much a saying, but I had to hold back laughter overhearing this exchange at the grocery store. There was a big ol' burly guy standing in line at the deli with his baby daughter in the cart. Some young woman comes alongside the cart and makes the typical wide-eyed, mouth ajar "oh my goodness what a cute baby you are" faces. The guy turns to her and says "Why does everyone make faces at babies?! Total strangers stop whatever it is they're doing to just make faces at babies. I don't get it!" Which I guess was an interesting point, but yeah, he won't be getting any father of the year awards any time soon.

When they'll just repeat words over and over like "Who's that? Who's that? Is that the doggie? Is that the doggie?"
Strangely enough, despite how irritating it seems to adults, there's evidence to suggest that "infantese" or "baby talk" is actually helpful in the development and acquisition of language skills in infants. Unfortunately I don't recall the whole mechanics of this phenomenon. Babies like to hear baby talk, it helps them bond with their mothers especially and I would guess adults natural inclination to repeat the words probably help babies learn the words.

Shall we go out for a little walkies? Sure,a newborn baby is going to jump out their crib, put on a coat and wait by the door for you. Then they're going to keep up in a 2 mile hike. When you think about it...what can you say to babies????????

I just hate the whole "baby talk" adults do. It almost makes me feel like they have no respect to the babe. They ARE human, why do we talk to them that way? cause they cant speak yet?
grrrr.. I talked to my babe like she was an adult and DAMN, the child is brilliant now! I did actually make coooing humming type songs, but no actual words spoken during that.

"Aw, look at HER! She is so adorable! What's her name?".....Very annoying when you have a son!
David - Actually, babies love when you imitate the noises they make. It makes them feel important and its a great game to play with a 6 month old because it teaches them self confidence and that you actually are interested in what they're doing.

To kids, it's "You'll understand when you're older."
To babies, it's baby talk in general. Imitating the incoherent sounds a baby makes isn't going to model the words and expressions he or she should.

My sister sucked her thumb and people would ask her what flavor it was. She told me recently (she's 35 now) that even at 4 years old she knew this was the dumbest question she ever heard.

my personal pet peeve is when people ask who the baby looks like... i mean, come on, he's a baby, he looks like every other baby, more or less. (i'm a mother of 2, and i think it's silly to speculate until they're older.)
