Brake the car to a stop, then start and accelerate to 30 mph. Can you feel the car shift gears? When you're going 15 mph, shift into 1st gear -- does it shift? If you can't feel it shifting, you'll have to take it to a mechanic to be checked. Sorry!

I am not certain. My oldest daughter has a Jetta - believe it may be a 2001. There has been a recall on the brake sensor - they replaced it this summer. The gears kept locking up on her (automatic).

oh i feel your pain....the same thing happened to my beetle after the dealer changed the O2 sensor that had been recalled...apparently they forgot to reset the idle...there are instructions for doing this in the owners manual..whcich i no longer have but i think it goes something like this..."with the engine cold, turn on your car with the key but do not turn the engine over. 2--fully depress the gas peddle for 15 seconds and release and then switch the car off. 3 start the car as normal"...you can see if this helps

Vaccum modulator could be bad. Take it in to a good mechanic and have him check. Have you checked your fluid levels, filters etc?
