I was walking and came a cross a mother and aa good 9 feral kittens. I was tempted in taking one but seems like someone is feeding them on their porch. Im worried about all these kitten and mother cat (who looks less than a year old) and adding to the feral community. Is there someone I might be able to notify a non kill shelter who would adopt these out? Should I knock on the person feeding them and ask if I can be of any assitance? I would love to adopt one of these kittens as well to keep my 16 month old kitty company. Im in Chicago if that might help. The kittens are eating on their own and playing so they are about 8-10 weeks old. Should I just attempt to catpture them and take them in myself to a shelter so that they can be spayed and neutered even if it means putting the momma cat back out into the community if shes to feral to adopt?

Below are two links for feral cat rescues in your area. Contact them, and they will arrange to live trap the cats, spay/neuter them, and then either foster them for future adoption or return them to the wild if they are not good candidates for domestication.

Although feeding them is humane, without spaying or neutering it only contributes to the wild cat population. Please call right away. The kittens are young enough to be socialized and put up for adoption.

Feral Cats, especially Mommas are Very protective. I would just talk to the People. With nine kittens, I am sure They would welcome the help. My Wife found out where We live that an Animal can be deemed a stray, and put to sleep within one hour of being caught. They deem it not to be a stray if They Animal is City Registered, yearly. We don't know anyone who does this. And there are many Animals around here. So please be careful if You decide to take it in, But be sure to talk to the People first.

I agree. You should ask them first. Many times what appears to be a feral cat is just a bit of a wild pet. With 9 kittens they might appreciate the help.

I think you should try to talk to the people first, and if they are not that interested in the kittens, you can take one for yourself, and take the rest of them to a shelter, or a type of sanctuary, were they be safe. Also be aware that if the kitten you take is feral, there a certain behaviors that you have to watch out for, not to mention, the kitten needs to be dewormed, vaccinated and tested for feline leukemian and AIDS. It will also need lots of attention, and patience to get him to trust you.

You should talk to the people feeding it. Once you feed a stray it is legally your responsibility here in ohio and northern KY. If they don't have a problem call your local rescue. Cat season is upon us and we are swarmed with kittens and cats but they should be willing to work with you. They need to be handles before they are completely ferel. You may offer to foster them for the rescue to get a better response from them.

Leave them alone because that person is probably doing the same thing that we do-feed them until they are tame enough to take to our family farm to live a good life away from the city.

If they are 8-10 weeks old I see no reason that you can't take one.
