Why would you want to get involved with his finances anyway. He might be feeling that you might be trying to control and get involved in his life too much. That is an area that we men care a lot of, an many find their identity in it.
His past experiences would def. have a big influence in his behaviour towards you. There's no easy answer, you must just have to give it time and show him that you are a person that he can trust on and he'll come around.
The more you push, the more you'll push him away, because in the back of his mind he might be thinking that you may have alternate ideas for all your askings regarding his finances.

I would leave him alone about it. When I first start dating someone I never let them know the amount of a bill or anything because I don't want them to take advantage of my generosity (its happened before). As long has he is taking you out and being a gentleman; why would it matter what he has or what he spends?

If you can't get through to him and he won't talk to a counselor or something like that with you I would leave him. The number one cause of divorce is money fights so if you don't fink common ground on this it could eventually blow up in your face.

Look in his wallet, worked for me, but of couse, mine doesn't have a bank account. Once I started "acting" like I trusted him, he started doing the right things, and now he can be trusted. Sounds fd up, but men are like dogs

if he is not ready to forget the past & move on, he shouldn't be with you as this is definitely unfair to you.
Both of you should have a good talk about this.
