This is kind of a spring off question...to a question I just answered...the question was posed as this...If the nazi were to come back today only they were going after people of your religion...would you deny your religion?? A lady answered that she would lie to save the lives of her children...so I am wondering, how many other people in 2006 feel this way? (I have no children...so I am curious)

Since you admit you have no children, you simply cannot comprehend the depth of emotion where your children are involved. I would do ANYTHING to keep them safe - torture, maiming, yes, even die for them. I'm fairly sure most everyone on here would do the same. Once you do have babies, you'll see. It's incomprehensible to someone who hasn't experienced it. Good question - hope you get the answers you are looking for.

If someone asked me whether or not I'm an atheist (even though atheism ISN'T a religion) and the life of my child was dependent on my response in the negative, you bet your butt I'd lie. I'd claim Catholicism or Mormanism or whatever they wanted.

And besides, I've asked right here on Yahoo Answers about whether some lies are acceptable if they prevent harm. A little bad which prevents a big bad doesn't "count". Also:

I wouldn't REALLY be lying. "It's not a lie if they make you lie". -Gale Harold

lie: a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth;

Therefore I wouldn't be lying, really. I don't want to deceive anyone, I don't want to intentionally feed them false information... I just want to say the exact words that will save the life of my son. If they asked me to say "purple monkey dishwasher", I would... and it would mean the same to me as saying "I am Christian". The words aren't a lie, they aren't a truth, they are just WORDS to me. My only INTENTION would be to keep my child out of harms way.

Unfortunately, the world places "life" over "soul" these days. While I may value the lives of my children (and yes, I do have 2 children), I value their souls so much more.

If "life" were all there is, I'd lie like an atheist. However, knowing what I know, I would not renounce my Faith for something as trivial as life - even the lives of my children - for in so doing, would I not be endangering their souls as well as my own?

2 Maccabees chapter 7 (you'll need a Roman Catholic Bible to find this) has a beautiful example of a woman who would not renounce her Faith for the lives of her 7 sons. I would only pray that God would grant me the strength to be as faithful as she.

I'm not religious, so I guess this question really isnt directed at me, however I think anyone in their right mind would lie to protect their children, regardless of what their religion is.
The disturbing thing is that so many of you said you would stand by your religion to the death of your children. You do realize that that puts you in the exact same category as Andrea Yates, the Texas woman who drowned her 5 kids because God told her to do it.
Just a thought.

I'm a bit saddened by the replies and would have to ask those who would lie, cheat and steal to protect a loved one if their God is capable or incapable of sparing same.

When you follow God's commandments, it make HIM responsible for the outcome. Look at the account of Shadrach, Meschac and Abednigo. God saved them from an angry king, soldiers and a furnace. God can save your loved ones from a few measly "Nazis".

I believe in God - no question. But I also believe that the greatest gift God has ever given me is my daughter. It's my duty to protect her. Therefore, I'd do anything that I need to do for her protection. And that includes the risk any kind of pain or torture (in this life or the hereafter) to save my child from danger.

The people who would put you in a position that puts your life in jeopardy based on your faith or your race are not people that I need to justify or defend anything to. Just need to keep myself and my family away from them.

I also believe that God is benevolent and understanding. He would know the reasons behind my actions and judge me accordingly. Since my actions would be in the best interest of my child, I would not be afraid of any repercussions.

no, I would not lie to save my children. God says "whosoever be ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you in front of God" Another thing is...that is what it will come down to if you are one of those left behind and you have children after God comes for His people. As far as my children are concerned. My children will go to heaven anyway because they are not at the age of accountablility. That means that they cannot choose right from wrong and therefore God doesn't hold them accountable for their sins. The age of sin is so great in today's world and truthfully, I would not want my kids to have to grow up in this...So, if someone ask me that and was for real...I would just say..."FOR MINE IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN." God didn't deny us while he was dying for us...

Well, atheism not being a religion, maybe it's not such an issue. But yeah, to save the lives of my children, I'd say I believed whatever they wanted me to.

Sure why not? If I was in their shoes, my God would understand it was more important I protected my children's lives than telling a lie. All that should matter is if I am true to my beliefs, not what religious label others see me as having
