Disagree with last poster. Rebel XTI does NOT use a full size CMOS sensor (it has a crop factor of 1.6x as do all previous rebels.

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/canoneos400d/page2.asp

a full size sensor would not have and crop (ie Canon 5D) and in fact is SMALLER then the CCD in Nikon D80/Sony Alpha

Canon = 22.2 x 14.8 mm CMOS sensor
Nikon = 23.6 x 15.8 mm CCD sensor
Sony = 23.6 x 15.8 mm CCD sensor

between your picks I like D80, However wait about 2 weeks first... Pentax has an ace up their sleeve that will blow D80/Alpha/XTi/E500 away.... announcement date week of Sept 9-15

I disagree with Panacea above also. The Canon, Nikon, and Sony sensors all measure almost the same size! Furthermore, chromatic aberration comes from the lens, not from the camera body!
The Rebel XTi isnt out yet, so it is hard to judge. But I dont like the Canon Rebel XTs because they are too small for my hand. I guess if you have a small hand then it's fine.
The previous Canon XTs pictures are smoother and have less noise usually compared with the others. The kit lens is not so good.
Sony is relatively new to the game, but their camera is a good deal consider all the features it has, especially image stabilization. It has a smaller selection of lens. Dont know how long they will stay in the game.
Nikon has nice ergonomics and great battery life. Their kit lens is better than the cheap lens that comes with the Canon.
Look at dpreview or imaging-resource. Read the reviews. Check the images and see what you like and fits your budget.

Of those three cameras, only the Canon Digital Rebel XTi is a "real" digital SLR. The other two are just digicams with interchangeable lenses. What's the difference? The sensor. The Sony A100 and the Nikon D80 both use a lousy tiny CCD sensor (it's actually the same sensor as Sony sells them to Nikon for use in the D80). Contrast that with the Rebel XTi which has a full sized CMOS sensor (like you would expect in a dSLR camera).

As the megapixels used in cameras goes up, they become more and more "crowded" on a small sensor like a CCD. This results in noise and in chromatic aberrations, especially in shots with alot of contrast, or shots where you use a high ISO setting, especially in low light. Although, for most shots, this is not an issue, this is not an acceptable level of quality for an dSLR.

The Canon Rebel XTi is clearly superior to the others. As Canon dominates the dSLR market on all levels, that is not suprising.

Strongly recommend you Nikon, since in it's new D generation the features are amazing and speed + light = sharp...
Nevertheless, try to put together just a little more of money and go for a D200, which I consider incredible and it's autofocus is truly impressive...
This D200, will preform as real pro with a not very expensive Tokina Lens AT-X 840 Af II ( Af 80 - 400 f4.5 - 5.6 ).
This mix: D200 + AT-X 840 Af II, will be amazingly rewarded and updated by simply adding a teleconverter ( 2x ok )... and even sometimes is difficult to recognize photos from this mix and a 600mm f4!!! with just a fraction of the 600 mm price!
Go out there and enjoy with this nice equipment which is good enough even for a very hard task as bird photography is...
Good luck!

On paper, the D80 looks like the best all-around camera. It's also the most expensive of the three. The other two models offer a built in dust reduction system, which is nice of course, but they lack important other features. Such as a pleasantly large viewfinder. Compare previews at http://www.dpreview.com/ and http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html and wait for the in-depth review before (pre-) ordering.
