Having served in the Navy and stationed overseas I can give you some real tips about what is great to get from Home and what is just fine and dandy.
First, ANYTHING from stateside is great, fine, and dandy all rolled up into the realm of outstanding!
Second, if you do send anything, wrap it up in the most current local newspaper, especially the Sunday funnies.
Third, send pictures, cards are great but take lots and lots of pictures. One may not think so but a puppy growing up or a kids birthday is something our great peeps in the military really miss out on. So pictures of seasons changing ( trees in the yard or at the park, summer camps, etc.) Try to scrap book them and send that to your friends if they are not out in a field situation. If they are in the field then send digital pix on a CD. Department stores will do this for a nominal fee.
Fourth, send disposable cameras so that you can get pictures back from them and scrap book those. Trust me, I still will occasionally look at mine.
Fifth, ask your friends what they would like from back home!!!! I know from personal experience that my shipmates really liked getting packages that had their local newspaper in it.
Be prepared to bake a whole lot of cookies too! Cookie tins that have been covered in pictures from home are just fabulous. :)
Thanks for caring.

Please clarify. Overseas as in, stationed in Europe, or overseas as in deployed?
If stationed in Europe, and they don't have cable, send them a tape of commercials. I'm not kidding. We've been here almost two years, and I REALLY miss commercials, lol. Other than that, most people have everything they need here.
Except Starbucks. If you have a way to ship a Starbucks, they might like that. I know I would!
If deployed (Iraq or Afghanistan), shaving cream/gel, gum, sanitizer gel, packets of Crystal Light, bottles of Propel, pictures from home (including scenery, friends, and family), newspapers from home, magazines (as long as they're not pornographic in nature), CD's (even burned ones are fine), movies, books...
Hope some of this helps.

Depends on the location. If its hot, send anything that beats the heat (mist bottles, kool rags). If its not a base and hygein facilities are lacking, send baby whips (they are indispensible). I spent 11 months in Iraq and, believe it or not, just the simple fact that someone sent me something, was enough for me.

I know it sounds weird, but to them it won't be. Baby wipes. Sometimes they don't get to shower as often as they would like. Baby wipes are a god send to them. Also, try to send them things they can't get over there. Like you said...touches of home. Certain foods (that won't go bad)...candy, hometown newspapers, cookies, fudge...

To x-mas we backed our husbands Rum Cookies(real rum not just rum flavour).
They were a hit.
Everybody wanted them.
(not because the cookies were the best because of there nice rum taste:-)
