I am amazed at the stupidity of this argument. Try comparing the fuel efficiency of a 4x4 with a people carrier! Should we ban them too? Then compare it with a transit van, a lorry, a truck, a Juggernaut (US), a diesel train, a ship, a plane, a coal fired power station, etc and see where the real impact is. 4x4s are an easy target for jealousy that is misplaced environmentally. The way that people drive actually has a dramatic impact. If you change up through the gears quickly, and cruise at around 60mph, compared to racing away with high revs, lots of braking (wastage) and cruising at 100mph, the fuel efficiency is significantly different. Best move would be to put rev limiters on all road vehicles, especially company cars!

This war against 4x4's is misguided as most people object because they use more fuel than other cars which is complete rubbish.
Some 4x4's are very fuel efficient, my father has a little fiat panda with a 900cc engine and some are hybrid with an electric engine such as the Lexus Rh.
Some are heavy on fuel, it's all down to the particular model, how well that car is maintained and how it is driven.

In the UK, they tend to be expensive cars to buy so the owners are more likely to have a bit of cash, i would think that servicing costs would be less of an issue to them therefor it's more likely the car will be well serviced. (logical?)

Big 4x4's are not boy racer material, you don't see them screeching round corners so i would say there is an argument that they are driven with more care around town than hot hatches.

I drive a Porsche, it guzzles fuel but i pay the top rate road tax because it's a 3.6ltr, a fortune in fuel most of which is tax and very high insurance premiums, probably much more on all of these than most people reading this.

Don't own a 4x4, not my sort of thing but all this energy would be better spent getting old rusty old bangers off the road, catching car thieves and what all those buses billowing out clouds of black smoke while carrying only 2 people?

Yes, and like asbos should be backed up with training in social and environmental awreness.
Better have a separate driving test to be allowed to drive these - then people who really need them and use them responsibly will not be tarred by the poor people who are just scared and cut-off from all the wonders of the world that they are prepared to be seen in such ugly things. And they must really hate their kids to drive them to school in these things - what sort of message do they think they are giving out?

I think thats great, Im in America and you know how bad this problem is here. I own a GSXR 1000 and a Datsun 280z, and all I see around me is large trucks and SUVs, it sad. We are suppose to be conserving resources and we have 60% of Americans driving these piles, it makes the question of who voted for Bush, twice, very clear. This is the most selfish country on the planet and only a strict law will help here. How about the larger the engine the more $ a gallon, or force the automakers to raise prices so high on these "idiot machines" not many could afford them, or stop making them all together. I love my freedoms but times are a changing, and it looks like its time to force these gas-pigs off the road for good. Thanks to this large group of Americans our dependence on oil will continue to grow, leave the big trucks to the semi drivers like me. The last thing I want is to jump into another stupid truck after driving a rig all week, and worse is riding my bike amongst these people, get a fuc*ing caravan! Quit feeding the Mid-East you monkeys!

4x4 drivers should just be hit with a whole load of tax to disuade them to drive such selfish vehicles that pollute the world, cause danger to other drivers and are COMPLETELY unnecessary in towns and cities!

I live in Cambridge, and it is infuriating how many rich idiots drive 4x4's, depite never having to drive in a field or 'off-terrain'. Ugh. Slap a big fine on all of them, they're rich enough, most likely.

By the way, just in response to the person who answered above, saying they are not bad for the environment (yes, you, the one who drives a ferrari, an equally SELFISH car to drive - your opinion is utterly not based on fact. 4x4s use a lot more fuel.)

Or better still, get the governent to ban anyone from buying them, unless they work in a farm. Sorted.

(he heh, you can tell this is an issue that gets my goat!)

What exactly would that achieve ? I drive a 4x4 mainly because I tow a horse box, I pay a higher rate of car tax for the 'privelege' I also recycle, conserve energy at home, use real nappies and walk where ever possible amongst other things.

It is comparative surely!

That's an interesting idea! I certainly can't see why anyone would want to drive one unless they live in the country and need to drive over poor terrain. Judging by their driving anbd parking, I often get the impression that their vehicle is making up for deficiencies in their personality. So perhaps we should feel sorry for them. I don't know...

Take a good look in the mirror and realize that you also make many choices in your own life that either annoy or physically endanger other people. I'm guessing your nanny-state mentality would take a turn if folks suggested restricting activities and products that you enjoy. Of course, I'm guessing that you think you know better than "them" how to live a proper life...right?

I think this is so stupid. If you can pay for the gas, go ahead and drive whatever you want. Whales put out more CO2 than SUV's. Maybe we should kill them all (joke!). If you prefer to drive a subcompact car, go ahead. But, since I'm 6'5" tall, I won't fit, and, even if I did, after having been rear-ended in a normal car, there is no way I would ever buy a small one.

YES!!! Especially when driving in London - where on earth do you need 4x4. They only drive them to bully others. I saw a programme with some idiot woman on saying she had one so the black cabs didn't mess with her. They don't mess with me and I have a normal car if you drive with respect others will respect you.
