I buy Clairol's Herbal Essences Highlighting kit. There are 2 different ones, one with a 2 prong comb & one with an angled paintbrush. I chose the comb style, knowing that I'd have to put in most of the highlights myself. My son got a big kick out of helping me comb it through at the back of my hair. It's a time consuming process so allow about an hour or longer to put them in.

As for the color, I chose the HL-e cool blonde hightlights shade. It's the lightest one. My natural color is dark blonde & this works well for me. I also used this same color on my niece's hair who's a couple shades of darker blonde, almost a light brown. The highlights come out looking natural & NOT orange at all.

My first highlights were salon done with foil. I paid $65 for wash, highlights & style. Add in $5 for the tip & I spent way too much! I can't afford that again though so I looked around. Most salons will charge $40 or more. Even the beauty college wanted $50. I like Clairol the best. It doesn't dry the hair out, lasts longer & has less amonia smell. Revlon dried my hair with hair color 3 years ago. Loreal is great if you can afford them. For the Clairol I buy, I get it either at Wal-Mart, Target or Rite Aide for about $11, including tax. I just bought a new Clairol kit to do this weekend. Your hair should be washed 24 hours or more before you highlight. If you've used hairspray, gel, mousse, etc, wash your hair & wait 24 hours or llonger before you start highlighting. While I'm waiting for the highlights to develop with the timer, I get my towels out & put the conditioner in the shower. I also drape an old towel around my shoulders to keep the color off my skin, using a few saftey pins to hold it together. I wash my hands with the gloves on after I'm done with the coloring & leave them on to rinse the highlight color out in the shower. If they tear, I take them off & slip on a pair of latex ones that I keep handy for all kinds of cleaning.

I keep the highlights looking good & lasting longer by using Pantene's Blonde Expressions for Highlighted Hair. They have some for brown & red highlights too. I use the conditioner in the kit box until it's gone, then switch to the conditioner by Pantene.

Have fun!

Hair Color Kits With Highlights

I have colored my hair many times. Many, many times with store bought dyes. Many a trial and error with me, I tell ya. My hair is in great condition, just so you know, and your hair should be too, regardless if you are going to dye it with stuff you buy at the store or paying big bucks for a professional. Great hair condition is a must.

As for your question, the best ones I've used is Clairol Herbal Essense OR L'Oreal Preference, it's a tie between those two for just the dyeing, not the highlighting

The brands Nice N Easy, Garnier and Feria, I have had disasters with these brands, please stay away. Nice N Easy really soaks in your hair (I used medium brown once, turned out jet black), it smells horrid, and does not fade whatsoever, after washing it for the first time your hair feels stiff, real dry (even if you use the conditioner). Do not use Nice N Easy.

As for highlighting kits, I've used the Herbal Essense brand one, and it worked great. I've used the Feria highlighting kit, and yet another disaster (it's pure bleach)..and NEVER EVER use a cap.

I would say that if you want to pay a professional to do anything color wise to your hair, I would pay for highlighting, because that is more easy to screw up when you do it yourself. Hope this answer helps. :)

Happy Coloring!

I've never gone to a hairdresser so I'm not sure of the cost but I would say doing it your self would be much cheaper. Depending on the products you get and tax included I would say roughly 15.00 to 25.00 (give or take) for both dye and highlights. Again it depends on the product. Plus you can also get coupons for the dye and if you look at the ads you can find out if any stores are having sales on hair dye. As for a product I would just use my best judgment. Everyone has a favorite hair dye and reasons why they like it and don't like others. So take these “it turned my hair....” stories with a grain of salt. If I could give any tip on hair dye I would say think carefully about the dye you choose. A lot of times (depending on the color) it can be darker then what it shows on the package, at least for about a week. Also be careful of what highlights you choose to go with your dye. If you want to make it easy Loreal has a hair dye/highlight kit out, I believe it sells around 18 – 19 dollars. You could also consider going to a hairdresser, having them do it, then retouch it yourself with store bought. I really don't believe having it done professionally last any longer then store bought. I know people who go to salons just as much or more then I dye my own hair. Either way your looking about 6 weeks. That also depends on the color you choose. Blonds show roots, red fade faster, browns and blacks are easier to go a while longer without re-dying.

Loreal Colour Expert....it has everything all in one kit. There is the hair color kit and a seperate highlighting kit. The cost is fairly resonable at around $20. Which is higher than other hair colors, but with them, you have to buy a seperate highlighter and spend about the same anyway. Its the only hair color I buy, and you can decide where you want the highlights. Another plus is the conditioning cream.....its really great. Good luck on whatever brand or place you decide with.

A hairdresser, at least for the highlights. Be sure to tell him/her what color product you are using and never never switch brands (they have different base colors). You should highlight every other color and do not run the color through the ends of your hair (this will cover over your highlights and the next thing you will know is you have a head of bleached hair with color over it). Reds are impossible to highlight over as is black. Good luck.

My mom taught me to color her hair when I was young and I have been coloring my own hair for 20 years.
the upside:
My gray comes back after a long time but it's all at once over night & boom I'm 40 again!
It only takes 30 minutes and I don't have to make an appointment the cost is minimal (all the girls mentioning Sally are right!)
I actualy like my own color job better than a professional (more subtle)
downside:
scary the first few times!
If you want to try it watch your hairdresser next time, even better bring a friend and have her watch too.
I would never however advise cutting your own hair!

Momof1and ontheway is right.
Clairol Herbal Essences is my favorite.
I do not color regularly. For some reason, my hair gets more blonde, naturally, as it grows, leaving me with a "haven't been back to the hairdresser to get my roots done look". So I occasionally will use hair coloring at home. I like this brand best because it washes out gradually. It is not permanent, so, when you roots do grow out, you don't have the tell tale line of shame skunk stripe thing going on.

It really depends on how much effort you're willing to put into it and how much you spend per visit to the salon. I used to get my hair colored, but it grows SO fast (I need touch-up every 4 weeks!) that it was cost prohibitive for me.

I switched to Nice & Easy - it runs about $7 a kit. 1/2 hour later and I'm in the shower and done. I don't do highlights because my hair just seems to get them on its own, so no worries there....

Savings for ME per year: over $1400 (I used to pay $125 a visit)

I agree with the others, go to a hairdresser if at all possible!! It's pricey, sure, but well worth it. If I don't have the money (some months I don't) I use Herbal Essences HighLights!!! It's foolproof, and I get compliments whenever I use it! They have one for short hair, and one for long too.
