Americans tend to use their knife much less than Europeans, you cut with the left hand and change the hands of your knife and fork over a lot. Often you break up food with the fork and sometimes don't use the knife as ofter. (as a broad generalization) I had heard it was something to do with how cowboys used to eat in the Pioneer days.

My dad was born in England and he said that its just the proper way to eat.

Fork in left hand
Knife in right

Cut food with knife, pick up with fork in left hand. Put knife down and switch fork from left hand to right hand and then feed face!

That's how its supposed to be done. That's why when you set a table the fork is supposed to be on the left side of the plate.

Americans just got lazy my dad say's.
