I have started to be pen pals with people in other countries, but I have never sent a letter to outside the US to know how to properly address one. I have an address, but am not sure it is all I need to send it. Any help would be appreciated.

Use the fullest address you can. For example, don't put "S.A." for "South Africa" as it could get confused with South Australia. It happened to me :((

It also helps with letters to European countries to put EUROPE at the end of the address. That way, US Postal will see at once that it's got to be sorted in their overseas/Europe section. Speeds things up.

And a bit of advice -- make sure you put your own (ie return) address on the envelope! Your local Post Office can advise you on where it should go. (I'm in Europe and the rules may be different here, so make sure.)

That way, if your letter can't be delivered at least it will get back to you and you can try again with better address details. Otherwise it will go to the 'dead letter office' and it could be a long time before you get it back -- or never!

Good luck,
Lenky :)

Well, hopeful your pen pal has provided his/her correct address to her. Write it out the way they did. In some places the name of the street comes before the house number, like --- Main Street 123, instead of 123 Main Street
The format is usually just like a standard letter. If, however, you are sending by Air Mail, which I assume you are because surface mail, or mail by ship, takes months --- You must write that in English and French on the front.

AIR MAIL / PAR AVION
First Name Last Name
Street and Number
City -- State Province if any ZIP POST CODE
COUNTRY

Fill in the address as you have it and go to the post office. Ask the person at the PO if the address is complete before sending the letter.
