HS diploma or GED. You don't have to be too smart to be a cop at the outset. They will teach you everything you need to know after you get into the academy. You rise in the ranks with a combination of time in service and good performance reports. If you want to be a plain-clothes officer or a detective, a college degree helps, but everybody has to start at or near the bottom. There is no substitute for experience. Especially in law enforcement...

Requirements, including educational requirements, to become a police officer vary depending on the police department. As far as education goes, some departments only require applicants to have at least a high school diploma or ged, some departments require applicants to have at least a certain amount of college credits (30 or 60 for example) or a 2 year degree, and some departments require applicants to have at least a 4 year degree. Most departments that require applicants to have college don't require any particular field of study. Getting a college degree is one of the best things that you can do if you want to become a police officer. Choose a major that interests you, that is marketable, and that could be useful for police work. There are many good majors for police officers and people that want to become police officers. Accounting, communications, computer science, a foreign language, law, and psychology are some examples.

It really depends on the state and department that you are looking at going to work for. In Texas, the state has minimum requirements of a HS diploma or GED and 12 college hours. There are other basic requirements also. Each police department has to require the basics, but can choose to require college or college degree. Some departments require you to pass a physical agility test so being in shape does help. Most departments require that you pass a doctor's physical. In Texas you also have to be a minimum of 21 year old when you graduate the police academy. Your best bet is to check with the department you are wanting to apply with and get their requirements.

It depends on the State you are in. The State of Washington requires that you be hired by a department and than they send you to the academy. The State of Florida requires that you take a 6 month course that will certify you to be hired as a law enforcement agent/officer to work in that field in the State of Florida. It really varies by state.

In Webster County, Mo, very little, if you're dumb and would like to get into law enforcement, contact our Sheriff Ron Worsham, who no longer has a state certification or the authority to arrest anyone, his jailers get arrested for impersonating police officers and writing tickets to the highway patrol, they blackmail citizebns for sex, jailers have been arrested for getting oral sex on the rooftops from inmates....I don't think it takes much edumakashun for that.
