I have noticed there are some single mothers on welfare getting only a couple hundred a month for income.

How can a mother of two support her children on $300-$500 a month?

Also these mothers on yahoo answers don’t work, so they sit at home and have like 6,000 posts on yahoo answers.

If they are on welfare how can they afford the internet and be on it all day?

I am not trying to be a jerk, but I also notice a lot of the single mothers on welfare (on yahoo) are teens.

And I know a lot of single mothers aren’t on welfare, my wife’s mother was a single mother of two at 22 and worked two jobs and never was on government assistance and no child support.

What’s going on here?

My wife's mother WAS there for her and her brother. She worked her jobs at night while the children slept at their grandma's house.

She was with them all day, she raised children who are good people!

wow is that all single parents get where you live. How do they survive. Here they get about $1500 I think. Sounds like a lot but by the time you pay rent/mortgage food pay the bills for phone electricity gas water car insurance petrol, contents insurance clothes for the kids shoes for the kids there is not much left over at all so I'm amazed they do it on $500.
How do i afford a computer? I was given an old one by my friend and her husband as he deals in computers and he had this one laying about. The Internet if you are on dial up is cheap $6 a month. As I rarely go out I think i should be allowed to spend $6 a month on myself without people like you bitc*ing about it. Get off your high horse and realise some people have no choice in been on government help. I am telling my kids all the time that it is important to have a job and not be on a pension. I have no choice as I am disabled and in pain all the time but they have a choice and they are not going to be 2nd generation welfare.

I did not read all the answers, but allot of them. Did not find a single intelligent answer. You all are so fortunate that you can sit around judging others. Wake up, and count your lucky stars that you can sit up there so high and mighty! There is no such thing as welfare anymore and you can bet your sweet ***, any assistance from the government is fraught with unbelievable hoops/red tape.
Good for all of you that you never had to humiliate yourself using food stamps, or practically giving the government info about how you breathe.

You people don't have a clue, and guess what, some people really need help, even people who had great jobs, but they have been outsourced/plants shut down etc.

Get over yourselves and find a effing heart! Just because you have not needed help, does not mean that anyone who does is a bad person!

So anyone in a jam can't get away for a few minutes and relax? This pull yourself up by your bootstraps thing has gone to far, or are we really just a bunch of animals?

I don't really know the answer for this one there is no answer really. Some people abuse the welfare system some don't.I know someone who is completly pathetic because of a man they are not married she had to work at a restaurant the whole pregnancy around smoke all day it was hard work. She got paid cash and was drawing unemployment weekly plus on food stamps but her man on the other hand had a decent job worked four days a week and on friday when he was off he would sit and play video games while she worked her *** off at a crappy restaurant. So not all women are single and on welfare just dumb as hell.He also would not help pay the bills she paid everything. So my point i guess is some women who are on welfare have men they just aren't married there are alot of situations where women abuse welfare or are on it for various reasons.

I'm a single mother of 2 . And all these answers make me sick . I don't receive welfare any more but I did at one time I didn't get the help just so I could sit on my fat *** all day . Being a stay at home single mom is the hardest job any one can do . So maybe these women treat themselves to a few minutes of trying to talk to others when they only have a two year old to talk to . Who's Business is it how they pay for it .

They can not stay on welfare forever and will have to get jobs. The welfare system has changed and is only supposed to help for a period of time (usually 2 years) while Mom gets training or hunts for employment. Where are the fathers of these kids and why aren't they providing support? It takes two people to raise and support kids and it takes two to make them.

Heh. Yeah, I've seen some of that.

I guess the good part of me wants to say that single mothers in general work very hard and if they need some relaxation time, than back off and let them have. And there are programs in different cities/towns that help low income people get a computer at home and low-cost Internet so don't assume that they are paying money for high-speed instead of their children's food.

The cynical part of me tho says, right on. And yes, it does have something to do with you because our tax money goes to these programs. And, unfortunately, I've encountered too many women who take advantage of the money offered to them just because their parents didn't do a good job of teaching them about birth control or because their environment makes it so easy for them to consider having babies at 14. And that's pretty freakin' annoying. Also annoying to think that I end up with $15K+ in student loans because I DIDN"T have a child while someone living in the same apt. building as me got to go to the same school for FREE AND get a master's degree FREE AND pay only $40 for a modern 2 bedroom apartment all because she had a kid when she was 16.

So yeah, I can see your point. :) Maybe get off of Y!A (or whatever site, tv show, etc) that they stay on to waste away the time of the day and get out and get a job and some pride.

However, there are too many welfare mothers out there who are legitimately trying to improve their situation for me to hold it against the whole group.

In order to get assistance, you can only make so much. The social workers literally tell you that if you make to much the only thing you can do is quit. People take that to heart! It is easier to sit on their rumps and do nothing rather than get up and make a difference!
It is a problem that needs addressed and as long as we work they are making money. I personally struggle to pay my bills at times but refuse to swallow my pride and give up and let all of America pay for my laziness and my mistakes. My children are not the mistakes that I made some of the choices I made were! I understand some people being on government assistance however if you are a mother of 5 all with different fathers and do not work do you not see the problem? Close your legs and go to work or start charging! Why is it that I work my tail off for them to sit home and be "bling bling" with nice things when I roll pennies for gas sometimes?
As long as Americans (CITIZENS) allow this it will continue and only worsen in condition!

**Sorry you allowed me to rant**

What I'm about to say does NOT apply to all, or even most. But I think I know what you are talking about, so to those women I am referring to.
They get more types of assistance than just a small income.
They get on those rent vouchers where the government pays your rent.
They get food stamps, Medicaid, child support for the fathers, and utility assistance for heating costs.
By the time they gotten all the "free" help that they can, that money every month only has to pay for clothing, cigarettes, alcohol, cable, phone, and Internet. And guess what, it's more than $3-500.

My neighbor (thank God she's gone) had 5, yes 5, kids. She got every assistance program she could. She paid for almost nothing out of her own pocket, and still got around $1,000 per kid each month in child support and welfare. She made more sitting on her fat @$$ than most people do at decent jobs.

For the rest of the decent human being in this country, we are supporting the lazy trash like her. It makes me very angry that hard working people who can't afford it are the biggest source of taxes that support the scum who want to live off the system.

I was a single mother with my 3 boys and collected assistance for a while when I absolutely needed it.My babies were too young to be raised without their mother around.I absolutely believe anyway in the father working for his family while the mother takes care of the home and raises the children.Daycare/babysitters are out of the question with me because the babies need to feel stable and keep important bonds with their parents...I'm old-fashioned.But,I did'nt sit on my *** all day and yell at my babies to 'knock it off'.I imagine that's the only attention some of them get too.
Mothers actually advertise on Answers that they are on welfare?....Ridiculous.Get off your *** and clean your house......And kiss your babies.Quit spending your money on b.s. that is unneccesary.

I GET FREE INTERNET SO IT DOES'NT COST ME A PENNY.

who really knows the answer to that and if it's completely true???why do you care?..i would assume that some single teenage mothers who are on the net all day live with there parents so go figure....but to the ones on there own they make money elsewhere...off the books and still receive welfare but who could really survive on 3-500 a month..welfare is different now...they set you up on job interviews and once you make enough they cut you off or if your on section 8 they just pay partial rent for 5 yrs and then they cut you off completely...
