When running, you want to be sure to keep your abdominal muscles pulled in "navel to the spine". This will help trim your waistline. As far a crunches are concerned, you're right they will do wonders above the waistline.
In order to affect the "pooch" or lower abdominals, lay on your back with hands behind your head/neck. Bend your knees and lift you feet off the ground in a 90 degree angle. Next, lift your tailbone off the floor a couple of inches and then lower. Repeat this exercise for 8 - 10 reps to work the lower abdominals and help flatten the tummy.
Another good one is while still in the 90 degree angle, touch one toe to the ground; lift it back up and touch the other toe to the ground. Repeat this for 8 - 10 reps.
Hope this helps!

best way to lose lower tummy fat and build muscle is to do hanging leg raises and reverse crunchs. But regular crunches can be bad for the back if done wrong...stick with running cause it burns fat all over the body, and is healthy for the heart.

Running helps you to slim down by raising your metabolism which in turn helps to burn fat. Running is not targeting just your legs.
When you do crunches you need to have your belly button pressed into your spinal cord. On breathing, Exhale when you lift off the floor, Inhale when you lower down.
Try different types of stomach workouts like: the Air Bike, Sit-ups, Side Crunches, Ad Roll Out - done with a barbell, Leg Lifts.. and so on.. Just remember to keep your bellybutton pulled in towards your spin.

Running uses many muscles including your stomach.
Your body must use many muscles for balance.
For crunches make your stomach muscles do all the work, therefore the range of motion is relatively small.

To work on the lower part of the tummy, one exercise that isolates those muscles is to lay flat on your back on the floor, hands under your butt, and keeping your legs straight, slowly raise them into the air then slowly lower them back down, without letting them touch the floor, and repeat. You will feel it in your lower abs as your legs hover over the floor.
