I'm not sure if it can cause you to be permanently paralyzed but I have degenerative joint disease in my back and there are times that I feel as if I'm paralyzed when I first wake up in the morning and it takes awhile before I can even move my body. There have been times that either my partner or my parents have had to come and physically help me get up.
I am on disability for this among other physical problems.
I know it is scary if this is what is happening to you also.
I also know the pain that you are feeling. I hurt 24/7 and pain pills, muscle relaxers, nothing helps.

Generally not. DJD is a common sign seen on x-rays, and simply means that there are arthritic changes seen in the joints as described. If the DJD progresses to the point of joint immobility, it's called ankylosis.

Herniated discs per-se are not a major concern. If they impinge on nerves they can cause chronic pain, and surgery may be required for relief. ALL these questions should be discussed with your orthopedic surgeon and/or neurosurgeon.

DJD can be debilitating, but does not necessarily lead to paralysis. Herniated discs are a little different from other joints affected by DJD, and pressure on spinal nerves can lead to some decreased sensation and associated symptoms caused by pressure on the nerves. But there are lots of treatment, surgical and non surgical, that can provide relief and correction. Get with a good orthopedist that has a good track record, comply with his treatment options, and pray! It won't be easy, may not be without limitations or discomfort, but can be managed so you have some quality of life.
