The elders or "older men" of the congregation are appointed to assist in shepharding the "flock" The Scriptures give counsil regarding those appointed to their respected positions:
1 Timothy 5:17---"Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine."
Titus 1:5--"For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee."
1 Peter 5:5 --Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble."
Titus 1:7--"Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain."
1 Timothy 3:2-13 admonishes elders on how they should act as shephards over the congregation.
Everyone needs spiritual guidance at times and a good elder is always appreciated.

It can be true but not necessarily always. One who seeks answers to sprituality will look for them anywhere they can be found. That doesn't mean that one has to change their beliefs to that religion that the theory comes from, but apply it logically instead. Age does not always have an advantage to the correct answers. Theoretically one would think that the elders are always right but reality tells us that some ideas have changed. Legally changed by Pope's & others who are masters of a followed religion etc. This is because of the differences in the way of life throughout the years. Even leaders of religion have become enlightened when and where necessary. It is proven in the catholic religion alone with the changes that have been made. The basics have not changed and anyone who is truly religious and has studied theology knows the basic and true answers to the most important aspects. But omitting new beliefs and theories from one's journey is a mistake, as again knowledge is power, which gives wisdom which brings enlightenment and everlasting love from GOD..peace and love ~p~

What a truly difficult question to answer! Generally, having an advisor to guide one is reputed to speed one's journey. You have an experienced counselor to guide you along the path and to help you avoid common pitfalls. On the other hand, good advisors are increasingly rare. Much more common are all the folks with shingles out and willing to advise for you a nominal fee. How does one find a guru who is not afflicted with the guru-trip, who craves nothing from the student, but that they awaken? Good luck.

In truth, every day be kind to all; be grateful for every blessing you receive, for everything you receive is a wisdom-blessing. Accept all; reject nothing but your own attachments to desire and expectation. Even a blade of grass can bestow great teachings.

Going it alone is good for certain people and bad for others. For me, going it alone is the only way I will do it. For a more socially oriented person having an adviser is the way to go.

I do seek guidance occasionally with someone very special.

I believe it could be a balance of both also but we must understand that mankind can be dangerous by being more of an stumbling block or hindrance than a encourager and spiritual adviser. We must have spiritual discernment and beware of ungodly counsel.

Not if you have reading and comprehension skills. However, if you feel more comfortable speaking to an elder about a particularly hard passage or lesson then by all means ask for help. But you might try praying to God for help first.

Everyone should be under a preacher, but you need a relationship strong enough so that when trouble comes you can go to God directly and get help.
