The obvious answer is to make sure he's getting enough fiber. This, of course, is much easier said than done. Still, kids tend to like *some* of what's good for them -- peaches, watermelon (any melon, really), pureed carrots, peas, etc. All of which are good sources of fiber. Also, try giving your son water instead of milk every once in awhile. Water's essential to proper processing of fiber, and, generally, helps with digestion. Indeed, it's possible he's getting too much fiber without enough water to process it. That's the other side of the coin you should be aware of.
Finally, this may just be an unfortunate period he's got to go through. Our daughter (who's now 2 1/2) has had a few "tough" BMs in her life. Our son (11 months) also went through a brief period around the 3 month stage where he didn't poop for three days (yikes!). Most pediatricians will tell you not to worry about such things unless they become regular (last several days to a week). That said, try getting some more fiber in him, and call his pediatrician for a quick check-in and see what he/she says.
Good luck!

I can soooooo relate to this issue. My son suffered from terrible issues with painful bm's. People would look at me like I was a bad parent the way he would literally scream and stand on his toes in an attempt to stop it from coming out. His peadiatrition prescribed Sonokot (sp) and had to adjust the dosages several times. Really, it was soooo dreadful to go through, it really ripped me apart. He's 2.5 years now, and I think he just re-adjusted his own thinking on bm's. The doctors all told me that it was more common than I think and that he would outgrow it. As much as I didn't believe it at the time.......he did.
Good luck and I empathize with you truely.

OH BOY ....Well my daughter is 18 months old and she is having constipation problems too but worse than your son. Well first of all don't give him whole milk more than once a day or give him 2% milk. any milk, yougurt, cheese, bananas, rice, apple sauce, cooked carrots and rice are very constipating foods. I am giving my daughter soy milk now. She was on Miralax but I think maybe if we change the diet it really works. give him fruits, like peaches, grapes, prune juice, whole wheat breads, whole wheat pastas and vegetables like peas, corn, spinach, tomatoes these are all good. of course plenty of water at least 12 to 16 ounces of water a day. if you do this ..you will see a big difference. good luck.

Try gerber prune juice, or jars of gerber prunes. If that doesn't work think about calling your childs doctor. My daughter had the same problem until I took her to the doctor and he put her on GlycoLax. It is a powder that you can mix with 8 oz. of any fluid. With in 2-3 days of this med she became regular again and it was no longer painful for her to go. Good luck

Give him apple juice, try adding a bit of karo syrup or brown sugar to the milk. Give him more fiber foods, spinach is a good one, along with cereals. If that fails take him to the doctor and ask for a stool softener.

Gerber Prune juice! Add 2 oz. for every 6 oz., so if you feed an 8oz. bottle, give 6 oz. whole milk and 2 oz. prune juice. Or if you're on a sippie cup, put 2 oz. prune juice and then fill the rest with milk. I do this, on occassion per my pediatrician's suggestion, for constipation and/or hard stool. Works like a charm!

Canned pumpkin is a natural laxative you could try a tablespoon of that if he likes it. Diced up grapes are excellant, Diced tomato cantaloupe and watermelon are my babies favorites and they are low in sugar. Plus more 100% juices they can be watered slightly to cut sugar as well. Good luck
The nursing home does prunes and cool whip mixed in a blender! They like it anyhow

I have a one year old too, and we have had similar problems lately. It is good to deal with it so they do not fear pooping.
Things that helped us :giving a bit of watered down juice, increasing fruit, decreasing grains and things, warm baths followed by clockwise tummy massage and lots of water.
The milk might be adding to the constipation as well, so it may be worthwhile to give goats milk part of the time, and avoid cheese. Breastmilk would be ideal, because it is perfect for his little tummy and is naturally laxative, so if you have any left it might be good to express it into a cup for him.

Give him some prune juice. Gerber makes Prune & Apple mixed juice, that should help and be sure that he is still getting his water too. Another things that you could try is grip water for hiccups, upset stomach, colic, etc.
Massage helps too. Use your finger and walk across his stomach down to his lower abdomen apply little pressure working your way from left to right.
I sure hope he feels better. Poor Boy.

I had that problem with my son and the doctor told me to give him Karo syrup and warm water. If that doesn't work try some prune juice. He may not like it very much but it usually will do the trick.
