I find Skype very easy. It's free from computer to computer and you can call people on their phone. It's cheap. I have checked if others were cheaper, though. But it's very easy to use Skype (I called my cousin once, and then she created an account in about 3 min.).
Just go with whatever some friends already use.

if u r talking about voip then out of the two only skype fits the bill.
as an alternative i use voipstunt...the advantage is that it gives free calls to many destinations for which skype charges

your question reminds me of another Q that i recently answered,
= whats best OS, windows , linux or Mac?
you see, every one has got their own pros and cons,,
skype is widely used in US to call fones, and in europe for text chatting
Gtalk is developing every day,, and it might soon get video chatting into its server,;
yahoo and msn are the worlds most popular IMs
i am using yahoo and Gtalk , i like them both, and i used skype too, but there are certain issues with skype that i did not like.
my be others like skype and msn most,,
depends on what most of your friends use,,
if your friends are using Gtakl and you have a yahoo messenger,, its not helpfull to you,
and vice versa with any other clints..
hope this is usefull

They are both good. I find that Skye has the more powerful engine and is less apt to cut out. When you are calling within the US, Google is free and even overseas it is cheaper. I have both so when one is acting up, I use the other.
