If you've got them really bad right now then you're going to have to give it a rest for at least 2-3 days. But, to prevent them you need to stretch really well before running. When I first started running track in high school I got them really bad, but then my coach showed me a stretch where you put the ball of your foot up against a wall, or pole, or something sturdy, with your heel resting against the ground. Your foot will be at a slant. Then you lean forward slightly into the stretch and feel the stretch throughout your calf. Hold the stretch for atleast 10 seconds then switch to the other leg. It actually helps with shin splints.

This is a product of muscle imbalance. You need to strengthen the anterior tibialis, the muscle un the front of your lower leg. If you have access to a gym, get on the leg press with a moderate weight. Extend yor legs, without locking out your knees. Hold this position and pull your toes back toward the front of your legs so that your heel drives the weight up slightly. Do 5 sets of 12 to 15 reps. Also make sure you stretch the calf after running. It is important that the toes be raised and the heel on the ground for this, otherwise you are asking the calf to both relax and hold your weight, which is not possible.

They will go away by theirselves, you may need to rest your legs but some people can run through them. I never could, while I was on the track team they got so bad I had to quit because they wouldn't go away unless I got more rest. Their are plenty of ways to prevent them. One is to get a full night's sleep, while you sleep your body repairs them. Also, I found that wrapping bandage around your shins tightly while running helps. You just need to strengthen your legs, eventually they will just stop coming.

I had shin splints for 6 months but ran anyway...they are very painful...but "no pain..." you know the saying!
I cannot prevent them...they come back now and then....I don't feel them on the StairMaster when I work out hard...I do feel them when my foot hits the tread mill all 125 pounds of me...
I will check back here to get some answers myself.

You need to take time off if you have shin splints. Talk to a sports injury specialist.

I take a hot bath to ease the pain from worsening. I get them from cutting trees for firewood.

They do eventually go away but it takes a while. You get them because it means your doing too much too soon. Try slowing down a bit.

Get a good pair of running shoes that are made for the type of feet you have. I was getting them bad, used the chart at a shoe store to figure out my arch type, and bought a good shoe.....no more pain.

Yeah you should def take a break, and soak yourself in hot baths. Wait till they are totally gone and then stretch before you work out. I was on the track team for 3 years in highschool and those are my weak spot as well. you should just sit for 10 mins just stretching them. k. stretch stretch stretch!
