I'm wondering how you did it? I know it helps if you have contacts and I don't have a lot.

Yes i did both check out my web site http://www.piotrwolodkowicz.com
How I did it, I went and talked with other artists whenever I could meet them, art shows, meetings, schools, It is good to go to art school even part time , even a community college.
I got involved in my community talked to politicians and charity organizations. I showed my work everywhere I could , restaurants, stores , insurance agencies, cafes. And that's how people got to know me.
Be proactive, organize shows and other things. organize an art club in your school or community center.
I hope it helps.
good luck

Create a porfolio. Record all your work in photos. These days the best way is to use a digital camera and put everything on disc. You can go in person to art galleries and let them have the disc or a copy thereof for a period of time. Listen to what they tell you about your work. It is like getting literature published; you may be turned down many times before you are accepted but you must be persistent and try to grow as an artist.

I remember a few years ago, my father was getting one of my paintings framed, and a few people really liked it and wanted to buy it. Of course my father said it was not for sale, but now I wish I HAD sold it!! It just goes to show that if your work gets seen by ANYBODY, it might really strike someone's fancy and there you go.

Get in on group exhibitions in local galleries, and especially respond to calls for art, you'll sell a lot more art if you can find out who's looking to buy something that looks like what you're selling. I've sold tons of art and artwork-related services. You can change what you're doing to try to sell it, and/or change who you're trying to sell it to until you find someone who's interested.

I sell my own painting prints on ebay, but not the originals. I do see a lot of originals on ebay though and they do fetch a lot.
