I'm attempting to do a system repair with my XP cd. For some reason it's asking for my admin password. When I put in my one and only windows password it tells me its not valid.

is there a password out there that I don't know about?

try just hitting enter instead of putting a password
most people dont set an admin password
if someone else setup your pc for you when you first got it
they may have set a password but try just hitting enter that should work

When Windows XP is installed it automatically sets up an account called "adminstrator". If you installed XP on your computer, you would have had to give it a password at some point during the install for the "administrator" account.

If XP came preinstalled on your computer, then trying leaving the password blank and see if it will let you in.

Is this Windows XP Pro? If it is, it's a password that the OS itself made. I think you can disable those. Same idea as the password for Recovery console in XP Pro, no password you had ever set will be the same as that one.

try a blank password. must people / resellers don't put in a Administrator password when they set it up.

OR

If you are an administrator on your system then right click the My computer icon on the desktop, select manage, local users and groups, users, and right click the administrator and change password. Now you have the admin password.

You are trying to use the Recovery Console, if you want to do a repair install this is not where you want to be. Restart the install and act like you're going to install Windows again...it will ask you if you want to perform a Repair Install, this is what you want.
