Kids today are raised in a "technological" world. They are taught to search Google, while we were taught to go to the library and look in the Dewey Decimal system.
They text each other as we wrote letters.
Because of texting, they type in LOL instead of laugh out loud. Or whatever the case may be.
Kids today are being taught that laziness and "shortcuts" are okay.
Therefore, they transfer that to their everyday life. They type words like "wayz" instead of "ways" because it's the adolescent accepted thing. Dumb, I know, but it's society letting them do this.
I can't stand it with how dumb kids are now-a-days. For example...true story... my niece was bragging last month that she was able to google something. So, I asked her what 9 times 9 was and she didn't know. That's my point. They know how to work a computer, but not know the basics in life like basic math or spelling.
They are going to suffer when they get to college or the "real world".

Well, my native language isn't English, it's Dutch, but as a teen (I'm 15), I just want to say that when I chat with my friends I use shortcuts, and the spelling isn't very great, but it's the way we speak and we write it down like that (I don't know if it's the same in English, I suppose so).
But, when I'm writing a letter, a mail, everything that isn't about chatting, I write it in the correct spelling and grammar. In English and French as well, but then even in chatting.
You are right, when you use that sort of language over here or in blogs, you seem to be very, very stupid.

All the answers are on target. To elaborate a bit on Chuck's comment, I'd add the word "ok" to omit at the beginning of every sentence written by a teenager.
The word serves no purpose in defining a statement unless agreeing to something. I find it disheartening that there are others besides our teenagers that care little for expressing thoughts in correct grammar and spelling.
Don't blame the Internet and quicker communication avenues as e-mail; there is no excuse for blatant expressions of ignorance.

Someone I work with was telling me that a teacher told her middle school class that spelling and grammar are not important because you can use spell and grammar check. Maybe it isn't stressed as much as it used to be.

Your spelling and grammar leave something to be desired as well.
"Why are spelling and grammar not important to today's teens?" would be the correct way to write the first sentence.
I won't even get into the following paragraph.

(look who's talking....look at your own statement.. the correct is GRAMMAR - not grammer)
It's a blog, not a thesis or scientific papers, anyone can write in any kind of grammar, tense in a blog. A blog is like a personal diary, not something that will be present in front of a linguist expert.

First of all there is a spelling mistake in your first line 'alot' should be 'a lot'. It's two different words. Second of all the phrase 'good grammer' is actually gramatically incorrect. So it looks like someone should brush up on their grammer before chastising other people about theirs.

it's not important because it is not taught in public schools.
this is a problem when entering the work force, because anyone who has attended private or parochial school will be a better communicator on all levels, and have a head start on success. you may have noticed that I didn't use - not even once - the word 'like' in my answer. the sooner you kids remove that word from your vocabulary, the sooner your opinions and skills will be taken more seriously. believe it!
