Both of my cats and my dog shed A LOT. I have heard that certain triggers can cause excessive shedding and that there may be certain types of food that can help relieve it. Any causes or suggestions for food? I have already tried purina, Iams, Science Diet, and your typical Wal mart variety foods.

I have 3 dogs, two doxies and one corgie mix. We have one on Science diet for his weight. They all shed. I can only say. They are animals they shed. The best remedy I have found is a bath and a brush and you can over do that and make their skin dry (well not the brushing really)
But have animal will have hair.
Sorry I hate the hair but love the dog. I have found no magic food or supplement. Vets do love to sell that dog food too. I have found the stuff to be real good for weight loss though, much better than what I can get over the counter.
Not sure for shedding unless your dog is for some reason really under nourished and most dog foods are just not that low in the oils needed to hold hair

Stress can cause shedding. Stress caused by the environment or illness. Because they all shed, most likely it's not illness. Could be stress -- do they not get along and have strained interactions? If so, separate them to give them some alone, quiet time.
The other thing that I might suggest is step up the grooming. Obviously brushing reduces shedding so if you're not brushing all of them, start doing do. I'd suggest once/week.
There are some shed control foods but I've never noticed a difference in our cats when feeding them that.

Oh yes.. the different food (dog food) brands BOAST that their feed reduces shedding, etc etc.. Baloney !! it is all geared to get your money.
And.. OH how I wish I could answer your question with a quick solution.. As you know.. ALL dog/cats shed.. Long haired dogs/cats give the illusion of shedding more but that is not true.. it has to do with the length of their hair.... And, as you know... old hair is removed and new hair comes in and then there is the seasonal thing when as seasons change, their appears to be more hair loss.
In essence.. there is no product or feed that one can give to reduce shedding.. HERE IS WHAT I DO and it is the ONLY thing that can be done(sorry....) it is daily or nearly daily grooming. I curry comb the cat and dog almost daily to reduce the amount of hair that I have to fool around with in the house... Sorry but that is it.. DAILY GROOMING

I feed an exceptionally high quality diet to all my dogs and cat and they still shed.
It is part of animals.
I do brush every day and that helps some. At times they shed more than others but it is a constant thing.

I had the same problem with my lab, he shed excessively. I did switch foods and finally with the new foods and coat supplements (Omega 3 supplement) the problem is under control. I used all the dogs foods out there from expensive to cheap and finally found Royal Canin. The dogs love the food and they have breed specific foods so my lab is getting extra nutrients for his coat. Check out their web site royalcaninusa.com. It is very informational.

You can cut it down a little by feeding completely all-natural food and brushing every day...the fact that natural food doesn't contain chemicals and preservatives really helps keep the skin and coat healthy! Also, daily brushing is a must! It does get tiring to do but its really worth it in the long run....

I have the ultimate answer to your ages old conundrum - Shave them bald. Not only will you immediately relieve all your shedding problems, but they won't shed again until their hair reaches natural lengths, which could be months! A quick 5 minute shave per pet, and all your flying fur problems will be solved!

We use daily brushing as a spray-on product called "LoShed" on our dogs that have heavy coats and shed a lot. Normally, shedding is "seasonal".

dear Ellen,
Your animals may have allergies,a fungus,or other infection.
Derm capsules, omega 3 or 6 and vitamin and mineral pills, could be helpful. Rather than experiment, your vet could be a best bet.
The vitamin, mineral pill and omega are supplements, regardless. My animals, are on these supplements. By the way if your children are itchy besides, there is a good chance they may have allergies.
Whatever you do, please continue to take care of your children. Humans are incapable of demonstrating, unbiased, continuing love;exemplified by our pets.
