All these answers are not entirely correct. There is no state income tax on earned income in TN, but there is a tax on unearned income (ie interest and dividend income) Its known as the hall tax I believe.

Tennessee gets the majority of its revenue from its high sales tax (9.25 or 9.75% depending on the item)

All states have taxes. If they didn't, the state would have no source of income and wouldn't be able to operate. Some states tax income (most), some do not, including Tennessee. States also have real estate taxes, vehicle taxes, gasoline taxes, "sin" taxes (i.e. taxes on tobacco and liquor), etc.

Tennessee in particular does not have income taxes, but makes up for that with real estate taxes, gasoline taxes, sin taxes, sales tax, and I'm sure some other lesser known taxes.

Sales tax for the state is 7% and then there is another 2%-2.75% depending on what city you are in.

This is not true. While there may be (idk) no state income taxes, there are property taxes, sales taxes, license fees, etc etc etc.
