Yes, but you need to focus on how long you spend walking, not how far you go. You need to keep your heart rate up for at least 40 minutes to burn calories. Some people can walk further than others in 40 minutes.

And then when your body gets used to you walking, you need to put more oomph in your workout routine by changing it some. Like, try swimming or lifting weights next. Marital arts is really good for me, because we're always doing something different in class, yet I'm staying active.

Brisk walk is a best exercise not only for losing fat but also because it improves your circulation and respiration. It is much safer than running. I think you can increase it from a mile to two miles, and try moving at a rapid pace too, so that your breathing gets a little uneven. It will help in expanding your lungs.

Walking is the best workout ever, bcuz it doesnt only make u lose tons of weight, but it also tones up ur body and legs in particular, it gets rid of belly fat, and waste fat(love handles) u will notice great resutls in the first month.. and if u cont another 3months, u will be shocked with how ur body will turn out to be!! good luck
