I listened to a sermon once that listed Jesus in everybook of the Old Testament, through symbolism. Like the red ribbon in Rahab's window. Has anyone ever heard this? The pastor went so fast that I couldn't keep up and I would really like to have this study.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it's true. The central theme of the entire Bible is about God the Son. From the prophecy of the seed of the woman (Jesus) in Genesis to the book Revelation. He is the final Passover Lamb (Exodus) to the Son of David (Psalms) on through the New Testament.

God bless.

Although the sermon had best intentions, Jesus (the name means God helps/saves/delivers) is not in every book of the Old Testament.

The Holy Scripture (Old Testament) talks about the Jewish Messiah, a title that is given to Jesus, the Christ. For example, Jesus is not in Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, etc. Simply put, the Jewish Messiah is not discussed in these books, symbolically or otherwise. He is found in the books about the prophets most notably Isaiah.

This does mean that there is not symbolism in the bible. The bible is an Eastern bible that incorporates symbols from the underlying culture. This is reflected when we say that the bible is the word of God as spoken through the prophets.

If you are interested in bible symbolism, just search for "bible symbolism" and you will get a number of resources. For example, Red/Scarlet = Sin/corruption Isaiah 1:18; Nahum 2:3; Revelation 17:1-4.

Although there are various opinions as to the usefulness of symbolism in understanding the bible, I personally find it useful when certain passages seem to contradict one another. For the most part, this is rare; however, understanding how the underlying culture uses symbolism does help.

My personal belief is that the bible has no contradiction and that it interrupts itself. Understanding bible symbolism help with the interruption.

Enjoy your new knowledge.

Christianity has come up with some pretty wild attempts at squeezing Jesus into the Hebrew Bible (mainly coming from Paul and Matthew).

In each case, the language in grossly manipulated by people who do not know the Hebrew language, or are examples of circular reasoning, i.e. the Hebrew Bible talks about a redeemer coming, Christians believe Jesus was a redeemer, so the passage must refer to Jesus.

Yes, I always likened it to Jesus being woven in the Bible like a Golden Thread.

One book I used to have a hard time understanding Jesus being apart of was Hosea.

It only talked about how a man of faith married and clung onto a whore for a wife.

It wasn't until recently I understood where Jesus was in that book.

You see, Jesus is called the Bride Groom and the Church is called the Bride in the New Testament.

Jesus is the faithful husband, yet the Church goes after other gods like the whore in Hosea. We consitantly sin and are unfaithful to our Bride Groom/Christ.

Yeah you can definately say that Jesus is every book of the Bible, you just have to do some major studying, but its more simple than that the same Lord that they speak to is the same Lord that walked on the earth

I have a friend training to become a Free Methodist pastor. He's taking a class on the OT. Part of each reading assingment is to find Jesus in every chapter. He said it becomes surprisingly easy when you actually pay attention to what you're reading. Most of the prophecies in the OT point very clearly to Jesus.

yes in one way or another Jesus is mentioned in each book, he is the central character throughout the bible, you might want to see if the church you attended records the pastor's messages and buy a copy of the sermon

The New Testament was written hundreds of years after the "Old Testament." The "new" is lifted from the "old."

Michael is right... if you want to stretch the imagination, you can believe anything is there. If you want to find a reason to find Jesus in every book of the Old Testament and you go looking, you'll find one, even if it's not really there.

If you look hard enough, and are very open in your interpretation, then I'm sure you could. I'd contact the pastor if you could for a transcript of his sermon, I'm sure he'd be glad to give it to you, or at least references or his sources for that information.
