My girlfriend is bi-polar amd has depression she is on welbutrin and fluoxitine. One is for anxiety and the other is for depression. We haven't had sex in two months she claims the medicine causes her not to be in the mood...is that one of the side effects of these pills?

and are there any known substitutes that can be taken instead that may not have these side effects.

Yes, the fluxitine can do that. It can also make orgasms less pleasurable (for the person taking the medication).

Sorry, not the answer you wanted to hear probably.

A loss of sexual desire is a common side effect of fluoxitine, aka, Prozac. Most anti-depressants carry some unwanted side effects such as sexual dysfunction, and there is no quick remedy to cover the loss of intimacy. Even should she quit taking her meds, her desire may take a long time to recover, and her anguish will return. I do wish you both the very best in seeking a solution in this matter.

Well, I'm here to give you some hope. I was on fluoxetine (generic of Prozac) for two years and the "not in the mood" feeling lasted for a few months but it vanished as my body got used to it. Within 4 or five months I was completely normal again. Prozac helps, you'll see. But I think Lexapro is better and has fewer side effects. I'm on it now and my sexual appetite is better than ever (my husband is thankful) and I feel much better in general. Maybe your girlfriend shoul talk to her doctor about that. Anyway, please don't get mad at her or impatient. It is very tough to go through that. But you seem like a nice guy, you are worried about her so I'm sure everything is going to be fine again. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

I want to point out that I dont believe one is an anti-anxiety. They are both anti-depressants and both can affect your sex drive. I was on both (at diff times) and did experience changes. However, it is important that you take ur meds...so ask ur doctor if there is anything with less of a side effect. Again, I dont see an anti anxiety...just antidepressants.

Yeah, the fluoxitine. That is generic for Prozac, and it does have sexual side effects.

I think the fluoxitine does it. I'm on wellbutrin, lamictal and abilify now and feel great.

yes they both do that, sucks but it happens. If it's a big problem ask your Dr. to find something that doesn't have that side effect, but most anti-depressants do this.
