well, Kev, sorry to disappoint you, but the name is not that common, especially in those countries with Slavic influence.
however, there is one thing I would like to share with you. my friends last name is Stanescu, and, if you care to check for anyone with that name, you are bound to find a looooooooot of them, even from different ethnic groups (gypsies). there is no friggin' way they could be related.
therefore you can consider yourself lucky.

It means "faded" in Dutch so it might be common in Dutch speaking countries.
