The Holocaust Museum
Air & Space Museum
Great Falls VA
Baltimore Aquarium/Inner Harbor
Olde Town Alexandria

If you have a rental car and feel like driving a lil over an hour, you can go to Harper's Ferry, WV.

Smithsonian American History is the only one closed during that time. National aquarium in Baltimore and in DC are both good.

National cemetary in Arlington (Kennedy grave / changing of the guard at the unknown soldier) is worth the visit.

DC is great because a lot of things here are FREE. Lots of great museums, outdoor concerts and of course politics. You may want to check out the washingtonpost city guide at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/cityguide/?nav=globetop

Here are my favorites (all of which are free):
- The kennedy center puts on free performances every day at 6pm, for the latest schedule visit http://www.kennedy-center.org/programs/millennium/schedule.html

- Want a great view of the city but don't want to wait in long lines for the washington monument - ride to the top of the old post office pavilian for a spectacular view. http://oldpostofficedc.com/

- ok - this one is not free - but I suggest having a drink or a snack at the rooftop deck called the "sky room" of the hotel washington (it's open from spring through october). The food there isn't great so don't spend a bundle - but the view is spectacular - you can even see directly into the white house! http://www.hotelwashington.com/dining.php

Don't try to do everything in one day, it gets tiring to walk around in DC, they look nearby but they are not.Carry water its expensive.
Go to two or three places, fix a time limit, get out at that time, there are too many things to see.
All the museums are good. Even DADA although some are too abstract there.
