Cell towers or labled. When the call goes through or is recieved, then it is recorded in a database as to which tower it was routed through.

All they would have to do is look into the database and see what tower the call passed through. That would give a generalized location.

Cell phones connect to towers. Based upon signal strength and the location of the tower, you can figure out the approximate location of the phone. This is true whether the phone is answered or not. Obviously it only works if it's turned on, though.

All the above, plus that she could have had a GPS phone that will give the location when calling.

maybe they had a computer chip in her lol or used google earth
