Calcium carbonate is a primary ingredient in chalk and guess what, it is the source for the calcium in Tums and other products. My guess is that you are craving calcium, but this is not the best way to get it. Too much calcium is going to be hard on your kidneys. In addition, there might be binders and other ingredients in the chalk, and those might be doing some harm to you. Get a CHEWABLE calcium supplement (take it as recommended on the label) and see if that makes you want less chalk. If not, you should see a doctor to do some blood work to rule out deficiencies or other problems.

It looks like you have an eating disorder called 'pica'. Because it may possibly be harmful (although chalk is not usually poisonous), it would be a good idea to talk to your doctor. If you want a little more information, go to this link in Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_(disorder)

(This is a free encyclopedia.)

BTW, it doesn't mean you are crazy or anything like that. It's just that you would be better off in the long run if you can stop eating all that chalk, okay?

Don't worry, just call the doc and s/he can help you quit.

Older women who take calcium pills to mantain bone strength are doing the same thing. To get the minimum daily requirement they eat the equivalent of two sticks of chalk each day. The only difference is that their "chalk" is in a half dozen neat pills, not lying around on a blackboard tray.

Pica is an appetite for non-foods
(e.g., coal, soil, chalk, paper etc.) or an abnormal appetite for some things that may be considered foods, such as food ingredients (e.g., flour, raw potato, starch). In order for these actions to be considered pica, they must persist for more than one month, at an age where eating dirt, clay, etc., is considered developmentally inappropriate. The condition's name comes from the Latin word for the magpie, a bird which is reputed to eat almost anything. Pica is seen in all ages, particularly in pregnant women and small children.

PLEASE stop eating chalk. You must be suffering from calcium deficiency. Take calcium tablets. There are chances that you will suffer from stone either in gall bladder and your kidneys due to intake of chalk.

So make a determination NOW not to eat chalk. Your health is more important to you than this bloody chalk.. This is my advice to you and i am sure that you will act on it and would say Thanks to me.
