Depends on how dear it is to you. In art class in school, we just used cheap hairspray (Aquanet), but hobby stores/art supply stores sell just such a spray with less of the adulterants in it, and made specifically for that purpose.
If it were something I wanted to frame, keep and display, I would probably go with the professional product made for this. If you are going to have it professionally framed, they should do it for you, also.

Windsor and Newton make a good fixative spray specifically for pastel, chalk and charcoal, but I am sure there must be others available in any good art supplies shop.
It is not cost-effective to use anything other than a proper fixative spray, you don't want your portrait to go yellow.
Spray is the only solution, anything else would disturb the pastel work.
Hope this helps

Try Prismacolor Tufflim Final Fixative....I highly recommend it for finished artwork. It's perfect for pastel, charcoal and graphite. It's also available in gloss and matte finish. I love the matte finish, because of the way it looks.....great quality.

Try Krylon's Workable Fixative. I use this quite frequently and it works well for me.
