My mother was a registered nurse and worked in many different states. Each state has different guidelines for what registered nurses are allowed to do. She retired after nursing for 40 years and she had some words of advice she always gave people interested in nursing.

It's physical work so don't do it if you aren't interested in working hard--you won't need to waste money on a gym! The only type of nurse to be is a registered nurse--the others have really varying levels of expertise and licensing. Get a four year degree. There are other degree levels offered occasionally but only the four year degree gives you the full job placement advancements and the ability to pursue all avenues of nursing including administrative careers and surgical jobs.

Nurses generally make a really good wage but it varies greatly depending on the city and current demand for nurses. You can contact any local nursing college and they can easily give you very specific answers about wages and responsibilities for your state/country. In fact the college websites may include a lot of the information you want.

Registered nurses can do a lot of things - to know the bounderies, you have to look at the state regulations. They provide patient care, evaluate insurance claims, create care plans, monitor treatment and treatment progress, dispense medication, help in the operating room, emergency room, delivery room. They work in a wide variety of settings - schools, clinics, hospitals, insurance offices, nursing homes, homehealth organizations, even law offices. Starting salery depends on location (state) and place sof practice - Most hospital nurses working night shifts make $35/hr starting - but there are bouses, etc. Schooling is another issue - there are two year and four year programs - depending if you want to go further in your education, teach, or just practice.
