Is it in the groin of the pup? Inguinal hernias are ones that might need to be fixed depending on the size of the hernia. He is too young for surgery on this right now. Contact your vet to look at this. If it is not large, your vet might suggest to keep an eye on it while he is getting older. Your vet might also suggest to check the hernia every day to make sure that it can be reduced. (Where you can physically reduce the hernia by palpating it making sure that the abdominal contents if in the hernia are able to be put back through the inguinal ring)
This pup is way too young to be away from his littermates. If this pup's dam is alive and is still with the rest of the litter, I would get him back to his littermates. Even though a pup can eat mushy food at this age, I would never take a pup that young away from its litter. He needs a few more weeks with mom, and needs the extra socialization from his littermates.

Puppy should still be with mom??

If he was taken to early and not handle properly or had to do more for himself as a result of no mom. It could be a hernia. Most likely it is not life threatening if that is the case and I would suggest to your vet that you get him neutered and take care of the hernia while he is under anesthesia. Don't let them tell you to do two different surgeries. Get them done at the same time. If your vet doesn't to prepubescent altering find one that will.

I would wait till at least 6 weeks to use anesthesia.

it could be hernia, or maybe a tumor. I would say go to the vet or phone them and see what they say. Thats probably your best bet. Do you have the mother? That is an awfully young age to be seperated, unless it was a ---no other choice--- reason such as the mom dying or something. Keep an eye on him, and make sure he's drinking. If it gets any bigger then definately take him in. just a call now will be fine, ask them what they think and do as they instruct you! GOOD LUCK, hoping the best for you and your pup(s)

I'm thinking hernia also. May be causing some pain explaining the loss of appetite. I also agree that a 4 week old puppy HAD BETTER be under the watchful eye of his mama.....if he was taken from her already that really is BAD! BAD! BAD! PEOPLE!
Get him to a vet for the "knot"

Could be something broken like a bone also this puppy might still want milk and not solids. Take it to the vet right away though to find out what is wrong. Any dog losing its appetite should go to the vet right away.

I was a vet tech a couple of years ago. It sounds like a hernia to me. Sometimes they require surgery. If you catch it early enough you can keep pushing it back in and it may heal on its own. It is where the umbilical chord was attached and for some reason did not completely heal. It is an easy surgery to preform, but if you can get it to heal on its own it would be better.

when i first got my puppies one of them had the same thing you are mentioning. When I took them to the vet she said it was an umbillical hernia, for the first 4 years of his life it stayed the same size but when the dog was 5 he was operated on to have it removed.

it sounds like a hernia which is totally operable - likely when the pup is older. This puppy is still with its mother right?
