Thats the least of your worries.
You need to be feeding your budgie vegies and fruit breads boiled egg pasta , rice etc pellets are better than seed , but to make the change , give half seed half pellets and gradually cut down the seed.
corn, spinach, broccoli, apple, pear grapes, watermelon, mung beans, multigrain breads, etc.
A complete seed diet will lead to all sorts of problems, really push the fruits grain and vegies
Also allow your budgie to chew on natural branches, and greenary, this will releive boredom and give him enviromental enrichment.
Best of luck

Don't sell you Budgie short by thinking he "will never know the difference".
You are way off thinking this bird isn't cognitive.
He knows a lot more than you think he does! Budgies are smart little guys, believe me!
Seed is not really a huge percentage of a bird's diet in the wild. But the seed you do feed should be the proper seed for the bird you have. The reason most people tend to feed seed is because when the boats containing the first wild-caught birds first arrived here, they were being fed seed. Of course they do eat some seed, but on the boats, seed is dry and doesn't spoil. It was an economical and convenient way to feed the birds during shipping.
The seeds I feed my birds are the healthy ones: Flax, hemp and rape seed. These 3 are the winners in the seed world.

Please lean heavily on fresh or frozen vegetables (heavy on the dark orange and dark green), rice, pasta, beans, yams or sweet potatoes, nuts, and occasionally you can give them scrambled eggs, yogurt, a piece of chicken, and cheese as a treat.
Fruit is good a few times a week. Easy on the grapes..apple is good, as well as cranberry...
think about purchasing some flax seed oil from a health food store and a few drops on his veggies helps a lot.
An additional calcium supplement and a vitamin supplement is extrmemly helpful: "Pro-Vita" or "Blair's Super Preen" nutritional supplement sprinkled onto their veggies will really make a difference.
The number one reason for companion parrot fatalities is malnutrition.
The bigger variety you offer to your birds, that is, the wider array of veggies they get, the more healthy they will be. I puchase frozen mixed veggie bags (no sauce) and mix them all together. For a budgie, chop it up finely.
There are hundreds of recipes on the web you can find that will assist you in keeping your guy in great shape, but you really have to know what to feed to keep them in good condition. Keep reading and and researching.
I hope I've helped.

canary or finch food can be offered to budgies as a way manage their weight. I was first informed of this by my avain vet and I trust him with all of birds life. It worked too the one that was ill becuase of being overweight did a 360 in about 5 months on finch food. Now all my birds live on it and are healthier. Budige mixed food has a seed called hulled oats and this is like a marsbar to budgies, who will dug out them first and eat only that before eating the rest.

Of cuase my birds get fresh vegges and fruit always and a mix of pellets with their seed each week.

seed has little nutritional value for birds as a french fry does for humans. They are fatty and unheathly when fed as a base diet and you are giving your parakeet even LESS than that because you aren't even offering him a decent seed product. Canny seed is mostly grass seeds and millet. So that is ALL your bird is getting to eat. That's not good. You need to get them on either a healthy seed diet if at the very least with fruits and vegetables, rices and beans or get them on pellets with the fresh veggies and fruits..etc.
If your bird has never seen any of these foods before he's not going to take to them right away. Keep offering it to him everyday, he'll eventually check it out and start eating it. It may take a few weeks.

Budgies have curved beaks and canaries have straight beaks; it would stand to reason that because they approach digestion differently they will prefer different diets.
