Mostly it's just attention seeking behavior. When they were little kids, their parents had to spend great deals of time with them, make all the child's decisions, and do all the child's work for them. As they move to adulthood, and become more responsible for themselves, they often resent that a good parent somewhat lets them go, do things for themselves, and make their own decisions. That's hard work and most teens really don't want to do it on their own. Kids learn that when they have a tantrum people will pay attention. The angry, pitiful, woeful, complaining, 'feel sorry for me', affect is often used and a way to get others to drop whatever else they're doing, focus on the teenager, and baby them.
If you pay attention to teens, you'd find that the more responsible and independent they are, the less they're likely to have that angry persona.

Well, I don't know if you know, but teenagehood is a very confusing age period. You go through puberty, you mature faster and you may sometime have dumb thoughts of suicide and sex. Why does it all happen? Part of it is the nature of a human being. The other part is society. Depends on how we all treat each other, our feelings and ideas of life are various. Therefore, quite often teenagers are, like you said, "angry-headed people." Hope my answer will help your mum understand.

teenage years are when you are at the peak of your physical energy. But you are far from the peak of when you'll have much influence on the world, so you have to live in a world you didn't design, populated by people with lower energy levels (aka adults), and which you cannot hope to change a bit before another 10 years or so have passed.
A teenager is maybe like a formula 1 car, designed for 200mph driving on a track, but in a world of dirt roads designed for trucks with 15 inches ground clearance peaking at 50mph.
on top of that, your internal wiring, as designed by evolution, is optimised for a lot of physical activity, risk-taking, danger - but you don't get much on the risk or the danger side in everyday life in modern society.
so you hate the adults for having designed that world, and for having all that energy but not knowing what to do with it.
and you do dumb things in order to get a taste of risk and of danger.

Tell mum it's because parents have stopped doing their job's! We have become unengaged with school, personal and just about every aspect of our children's lives and we wonder why? I hope you mum is different, but this is the norm that I am seeing as far as children being raised with no guidance and parents trying to be friends, instead of parents.

They're confused...they want to be independent but are stuck at home...they blame everyone else for their crappy life...it's a phase which most get out of after finding out when they are off in the real world trying to make a living.

Because they didn't get the attention they needed from their parents. I blame the parents for a lot of the crap that is going on with youngsters today. If you are not going to be there for your kids, don't have them!!!

I think its because they are caught between adulthood and childhood, they have alot of stress. On one hand they are expected to act like an adult, but on the other hand they don't yet have privileges that an adult has.
