By train anywhere from 30 min to an hour+ depending on where you are leaving from. Look at lirr.org for ttrain times.

It depends on where you are starting from...
The best bet is to get onto a Long Island Rail Road train to Penn Station.
Penn Station is UNDER Madison Square Garden and there are many many many signs to get you from the station to the arena.
