why is it that senior citizens are granted extra protections like property tax exemptions? seems any tax break should be based on need and not age.

I agree. So many people get special rights and some people can't even get equal rights.

How about we just remove all tax breaks.

To the best of my knowledge the only tax break that an elderly person gets that others don't is that their social security retirement benefits are not taxable. By the way, this is a "tax" that the elderly paid. Unlike many of the other tax "breaks" that are given.

So... if we remove all tax breaks..

We can start taxing social security retirement benefits to the elderly, social security welfare payments, social security food stamps, social security disability income, veteran's pensions, public housing.

We can also do away with tax credits... earned income credits, child care credits, education credits.

You willing to pay taxes on all of these just to stick it to the elderly, who, by the way, paid into social security?

Civil rights has absolutely nothing to do with what taxes the elderly do or do not pay.

When the day comes that you are old enough to pay taxes (obviously you're not now) then perhaps you will realize how ridiculous your statement was. Let me guess... You are a Bush Basher as well.

Their tax break don't hurt you at all, why do want want to take benefits away from elderly people on a fixed income? How bitter and selfish can you be?besides that, it's not really discrimination because when you get older you will get the same benefits.

One thing obvious; you are not aged. Societies from the beginning have always honored the elderly. Our society does not. Your opinion reflects that. Our society honors the superficial and the unimportant.
Youth is honored over age; beauty is honored over ugly; thin is honored over fat; rich is honored over the rest; sport is honored over academics; false is honored over truth; fun is honored over duty; and everything honored today is something that is temporary. You will be old one day. You will enjoy the benefits of being a senior citizen, unless someone like you, who thinks like you, manages to get those benefits removed just as you are getting them. That would be a real bummer, wouldn't it?
