I've been reading about raw, unpasteurized milk as being far superior in nutrition to traditional, store-bought milk... but what about the bacteria content in raw milk?

Anyone have any thoughts or experience with raw milk? I'd be interested in hearing your comments.

I love raw milk. There's a risk of ecoli, etc., but I don't think it is as high as the risk with meats. I think the nutritional value is much higher than pasteurized milk.

If you're pregnant or nursing, I wouldn't drink it just because of the small risk. And I wouldn't give it to my baby. However, for me and my older kids, we love it!

It is also illegal to sell it in some states.

Those kind of unsupported claims were being passed around since Louis Pasteur found that a little heat would keep bacteria from killing a lot of milk drinkers. There has always been a clique that said they are stronger than germs and have a real enthusiasm for imagined nutritional superiority.

Bacterial content in raw milk is a crap shoot. Maybe you will drink some that is low in bacteria maybe some that is lethal.

Try reading nutritional fiction less and using your brain more.

It really depends on what you mind more. It may be pasturized milk, but its still connected to a cow, and you don't know if their udders have sores on them and are excreting puss into your milk. Farmers will inject hormones into their cows to keep them continually producing milk in large quantities, so you get that in there as well. Supposedly they don't do that with the raw milk, but you don't really know what the condition of the cow is either.

I have even seen been fortunate enough to take it. All you need to remember is that it is not good to drink milk directly from a cow or goat but there is a home process of pasteurizing it.

You first remove the top layer fat (which is used to cooking) then boil the milk and it is ready for taking. It is sweeter than the store milk and much healtheir

Raised on a Jersey cow (highest butter fat) dairy farm...drank it all the time....no problems here. Mom used to make butter from the cream that would rise to the top...wonderful:)

You don't want to take a chance on possible large amounts of bacteria of many species.. That is why milk is 'pasteurized' nowadays.
