Respect the culture you are visiting. Most Americans can't seem to get that concept. Some other cultures wonder 'why, when Americans are some of the richest people in the world, do they wear such sloppy clothes, like dirty tennis shoes and cut-offs when visiting churches or temples. Don't stay in AC-only high rise hotels and resorts, try staying in homestays and guesthouses, many times run by local families. In this way you might actually meet some of the local people not just the ones that clean your hotel room. Make at least a small attempt at learning some of the language of the country, people appriciate that. Don't be hot-headed and get all bent out of shape if something doesn't happen as fast as it would in your country. Smile alot and have fun! I know this is common sense but it still falls under the catagory of 'respect the culture you are visiting'.
