I am thinking about signing up for their home Residential Premium Unlimited Plan for $24.99/mouth.(unlimited local and long distant calls with many features like call waiting, caller ID...etc) I have cable ISP already. Is the savings worth the switch? I use verizon now.

It depends on how much you currently spend on your telephone bill right now. There are certainly advantages to having a VoIP phone line, but there are also some things to watch out for...

1) Do you live in an area where E911 service is already offered? This means that if you dial 911 from your Vonage phone, you should get connected to you local 911 operator. Not all areas have it.

2) Do you rely on your home line for critical communication? Although most VoIP companies are getting better at this (especially Vonage), there are still times when their service may be interrupted. If you rely on their service, this can be bad.

3) Does Vonage offer local numbers in your area? I ask because unfortunately they don't offer local numbers where I live, and when I had them, it meant that everyone calling me had to dial long distance.

Having said all that, I think it is definitely worth the switch. I've had VoIP for about 2 years now, and I really like it. Sometimes the call quality can be a little choppy, or the sound will be a little delayed, but not too bad usually.

Lastly, if you're looking to make the switch because you make a lot of long distance calls to other countries, you may want to look at a couple of other VoIP providers like Lingo or Sunrocket, who offer either free long distance to Europe, or a monthly credit towards international calls.

If and when you make the switch, you can do a little research on how to make all of the phone jacks in your house work with your new VoIP line. It's not difficult. Maybe post another question when you're ready? :-)

It depends on how you use you phone and what you expect to get out of the service. My fiance each have cell phones but we want home service also because it's more comfortable than talkign on a cell.

We definitely save a lot of money over standard service, and I love the fact that it's a simple consistent cost rather than a confusing set of multiple bills that I can never understand. There are times that the service is down though. Since we have other options it's never really a bother. If you rely on your home phone only and would have issues with it being down every oncce and a while (if only for short moments) you might be willing to pay the higher price.

A small but worthy point, Vonage also has lot's of cool free services such as call forwarding, voicemail via web, internet access to your call log, etc. that the phone compnay charges and arm and a leg for.

i havent used verizon
but i was with att and i recently switched to vonage.
it is a significant monthly drop but it costs quite a bit to sign up. you cant call information. and they have a 911 thing that is a little confusing. they wont allow you to pay by check or in the mail- you can only sign up with a credit card and they automatically deduct. also it sounds alittle different talking to someone- not bad just different
aside from all that it has been ok so far

You will love it for the first three months. Then they have your money and hooked, so they will put you at the bottom of their service line. So you will notice that the quality is severely distorted. You will complain to vonage, then they will pretend to have no clue what you are talking about. Been there done that.

Seriously, don't do it. I had it and it sucked. Customer Service was awful, the line was always scratchy and sometimes there wouldn't even be a tone. We called and had it cancelled for a lovely fee of $130. Don't waste your time or money.

don't do it!!!! i had the worst experience with them i don't even know where to start. first they promised me the first 30 free, they charged me AND they hadn't even switched my phone service yet. then, i told them nevermind cuz i found out 911 service doesn't work with them and guess what?? they changed it anyways.....how i found out they changed it? cuz my phone stopped working and when i called my phone provider they told me i no longer was their customer cuz i got switched. vonage tried for TWO days to get my service working and when they couldn't... i told them to forget everything..... to switch me back and what did they do?????? they just disconnected me completely AND charged ME for disconnecting the service!!!!!! AAAARRRRRRRGH!!!!!!! can you tell i'm still upset!? so when i called my initial phone svc provider to give me back my number they said they couldn't because vonage kept the number and it took about another week b4 i got my svc working again because vonage was tying up my line. THEY SUCK!!!!!!
